The old Angel Pub has been transformed into the Missouri Angel Bar, specialising in modern American food and drink.

The Venue
Given a handsome renovation, the old Angel Pub’s features have been restored and put on display to good effect. Wood panelled walls are painted in comforting colours of cream and beige whilst the floors have been stripped and refinished.

The bar itself is a simple carved wood affair and a collection of funky chandeliers add a touch of whimsy. There are large windows to let in light, coupled with high ceilings, giving the Missouri Angel Bar a sense of space despite its rather limited proportions.

The Atmosphere
Aimed squarely at the twenty-to-thirtysomething City crowd, the Missouri Angel Bar is the right mixture of casual and polished. It’s hard to say what’s American about such a period English property and the American menu does sit slightly at odds with its surroundings. That said, the staff are excellent, the premises clean and in good nick, and it is a relaxed upmarket pub for a nice drink or bite to eat.

The Food
The bar menu focuses on upmarket nibbles with mixed nuts, olives and chunky chips with red pepper and chipotle mayo for munching, all at under £5. For something a bit more substantial, there is a chicken Caesar salad, fishcakes, ribs and a premium beef burger in the £8-£14 range. In addition, there is a first floor dining room at Missouri Angel with a full a la carte menu (from which you can order in the bar).

The Drink
The two draught beer choices at the Missouri Angel Bar both come from America with Sierra Nevada, a lovely pale ale, and Anchor Steam, a heartier steam lager. Bottled beers include Brooklyn Lager, Goose Island, Estrella and Michelob. A small but select wine list flaunts a good mixture of bottles from Europe, the Americas, South Africa and New Zealand at sensible prices by both the glass and bottle. Champagne features too with a range on offer from Mumms at £35 up to Dom Perignon at £150.

The Last Word
The Missouri Angel Bar is an attractive little pub, great for a casual lunch or a few drinks with friends in smart surroundings.
