The ViewLondon Review
An open-minded tavern in the heart of Theatreland.
The Venue
Molly Moggs is nestled in the midst of Theatreland, on the corner of Charing Cross Road and Old Compton Street. Quite possibly one of the smallest pubs in London, this quaint little watering hole is a great drinking stop before - and after - visiting one of the many theatres in the area.
From the outside, Molly Moggs looks warm and inviting. Decorated in green and gold with hanging baskets and plants outside, it looks like it’s straight out of a Charles Dickens novel, with a welcoming feel to entice punters inward. Once inside, it’s clear that this is not the place for people who are claustrophobic. Made up of just one small square room with a bar running along one side, this place is tiny compared with many other pubs in the area. It also has no proper seating, just a few stools scattered around, and on busy days don’t expect to bag one of these. A large TV overhangs the bar showing Sky Sports on weekdays.
Everywhere inside Molly Moggs points to its connections with Theatreland. The ceiling is decorated with many posters from West End shows, old and new. Near the door you can pick up various flyers showing the current plays and shows in the area.
The Atmosphere
Molly Moggs is like any other traditional pub at the start of the week; a few quiet punters sip their after-work beers and chat. As you head towards the latter end of the week, however, this all changes. The pub shows off various entertainers; expect to see sequins, glitter and lipstick - and that’s just the men. This pub is in the heart of Soho, so the crowd is very eclectic and gay friendly. The staff are chatty and quick to serve, although on busy nights it does get crowded at the bar.
The Food
The fare here is pretty simple, as you might expect. Doorstop sandwiches are £4 with fillings such as smoked salmon and cream cheese, roast beef, and rocket and cheddar cheese. For those who want warming up in the cold winter months, they also offer a bowl of homemade soup and a roll for £4.
The Drink
Various lagers are on draught here such as Kronenbourg, Fosters and Carling. They’re reasonably priced the area at £3.10-£4. Adnams is the only house beer on offer priced at £3.10. Bottled beers are priced at £3.40, and a double shot of any spirit will set you back £3.50. A glass of the house white or red is £4.
The Last Word
A small, charming little pub. Molly Moggs is ideal for a pre-theatre drink or a post-theatre drag show.
