The ViewLondon Review
Cheap food, drinks and sports: could it be more conventional? Don’t expect anything exciting at the Montagu Pyke.
The Venue
The Montagu Pyke is a modern space, built onto several levels and with two entrances on opposite sides of the building. It is definitely a large pub in which nothing is missing: two bars? Check! Couches? Check! Booths? Check! And plenty of them. Big TV screens? Check! Slot machines? Check! The decor is modern, and light wood, sinuous metal works and purple panelling would give a smaller environment a stylish edge. Probably because of its large size, though, the Montagu Pyke appears as a pretty impersonal space.
The Atmosphere
Often the target of large groups, the Montagu Pyke is a popular stop for a cheap bite and drink in the often expensive Soho. Basically, if foreign food is not your thing, the this pub could satisfy hunger and thirst at a very affordable price. In it you can find tourists alongside students, workers and cab drivers. There are almost no regulars, due to the lack of residents in Central London, or maybe because of the unremarkable atmosphere of the place: this pub lacks character. It can be crowded during sport events or when eating time arrives, but even then, the spark of life seems missing.
The Food
As customary with Wetherspoons, this place offers a bit of everything: pub main-fares parade alongside pasta dishes, salads, sandwiches, grill offerings and a lot more (the menu is extensive; there is very little foreign food, though). The common denominator to them all is the cheap price with the burger, chips and drink combo at £5 the most common option and rest priced between £2.50 and £6 (a couple of quid more for the steaks). The quality and presentation of the food is not exactly exquisite but for the price you pay, it is probably wise not to expect a top service.
The Drink
Like the rest, the drinks at Montagu Pyke are on the cheap side. They have a bit of everything available: wines, spirits, hot drinks and even cocktails. Wine bottles start at just £7, spirits are priced from £2 and the few cocktails are definitely cheaper than anywhere else in the area. The beer selection deserves a word extra: do not expect anything special but they have enough lagers, ales and stouts to satisfy most palates. Central and East European beers are well covered, with some interesting ones to choose from, and some more exotic countries appear in the list as well.
The Last Word
Not a place you are likely to fall in love with, the Montagu Pyke is a straightforward pub catering to a straightforward taste: cheap drinks, affordable food and a bland environment is to be expected.
