The ViewLondon Review

StarStarStarStarStar
Review byEzelle Alblas09/05/2012
Following a costly refurb by Prospect Design International, celebrity favourite Mo*vida has reopened its doors. Regulars can rest assured it remains fairly similar but some bespoke additions and internal reshuffing help give it fresh appeal.

The Venue
Situated next to the London Palladium, on the busy thoroughfare of Argyle Street, the usual roped off entrance flanked by bouncers marks your arrival. Inside it's divided into a lounge bar called Mo*od and the main club Mo*vida. The two previous other rooms have been discarded to make the space more intimate. A new VIP room named Le Salon incorporates two giant beds luxuriously furnished with plush velvet cushions and heavy drapes to cordon off your gang from prying eyes. Chaise longues with arty prints of ?amingos printed on them make up the rest of this intimate space.

The main club space is made up of padded leather banquettes and small round tables balancing ice buckets and glasses. A beautiful rainbow coloured LED dance?oor lights up this room and pink ledges and tables are visible throughout. A huge video screen showing visuals takes up one wall and the DJ booth has been moved into a more central position. Artwork commissioned by Signal Gallery is scattered on walls throughout, with each piece available to buy for those with a few grand to spare. The overall look is sort of Louis XIV crossed with contemporary street art and is visually very striking.

The Atmosphere
The Mo*vida door team hand pick their crowd (being famous or fit helps), but once inside the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. With plenty of seating it’s not just about the dancing but the people watching too.

The Music
Many a celebrity has been on the decks at Mo*vida and having recently opened its sister club in Dubai, international DJs swing between the two. The music is a mix of Ibiza-style commercial house and R&B, and the new centralised DJ booth makes a great visual impact.

The Drink
Classic cocktails such as mojitos and bellinis are the order of the day here. There are no signature drinks or group sharing cocktails but bring a credit card as the cocktails weigh in at £14 a pop. A phone call to the club is needed for table bookings and these require two bottles per group of six, with the likes of Dom Perignon house champagne priced at £280 or Belvedere vodka at £240.

The Last Word
With clubs opening and shutting all the time, it’s clear the people behind Mo*vida know what they’re doing, and a steady series of refurbs has helped them stay relevant. A night here is certainly going to hurt your bank balance, but it remains one of the leading nights out on London’s celebrity club circuit.
