The ViewLondon Review

Review byTacita Vero'30/01/2008
A greatly designed contemporary space, mybar Bloomsbury is a cool Feng Shui treasure box filled with great drinks and posh food.

The Venue
Belonging to the Bloomsbury address of myhotel, mybar Bloomsbury is a Feng Shui inspired space made of ultra-modern contemporary furniture: black and white mingles with acid green, couches are nonchalantly mixed with tables and chairs, and no two pieces are the same. The soft atmospheric lights and the lounge music complement the effect: mybar Bloomsbury is uber stylish and is made to impress.

The main bar is right at the entry, near the small patio on the sidewalk - it isn’t very big, adding to the cosy feel of this hotel bar. A smaller room at the back with mirrored walls called mysnug is available for private hire and the bar is open 24/7 for residents.

The Atmosphere
A wealthy hotel crowd mixes with a those attracted by its fashionable atmosphere. However, not everybody is the daunting I-am-cool-and-have-too-much-money type, and groups of friends are often seen having dinner or a drink. The arty and stylish clientele are definitely the majority, but mybar Bloomsbury is surprisingly eterogeneous.

Discretion is the rule - a wise approach considering the potential fame of the hotel guests. Coming in with your crew and letting the friendly staff seat you in your own corner is the key to having a great night here.

The Drink
The cocktail list is well structured – unsurprisingly perhaps for a bar of this calibre. The flavours are a real mix of east meets west. There are all the classics, including a great range of mojitos: the Ultimate Mojito comes topped with La Fee absinth and is flamed - an experience not to be missed!

After the martinis, it is the time for vodka, gin, rum, tequila, whisky, brandy and bubbly concoctions, all cleverly divided into straight up, on the rocks or long and refreshing. A few of them are real show stoppers like the Baby Dragon (chili, cucumber, guava juice, lemon and tanqueray) and the tantalizing Wasabi Sip (tequila, mandarin napoleon liquor, wasabi, basil, mint and lime).

Shooters, following the Feng Shui philosophy of mybar Bloomsbury, are designed around the five elements, but if you are a more down to earth drinker, the liquers are good and provide some gems like 4Square spicy rum or homemade chocolate vodka.

While cocktails are the real attraction, wines are present and are reasonably priced at £4.50-£6.0 per glass and £16.50-£30 per bottle. You can also have a beer (£3-£4.50): it’s your choice between Lapin Kulta (Finland), Ka Steel Cru Fine Lager (France) and Leffe Radieuse.

The Food
The most interesting section of the menu here is the starters (£5.50-£10): ponder upon dishes like sugar and juniper cured kangaroo but choose hand picked crab and sweet potato tart.

As far as the mains (£11-£17) and light bites (£5-£6.50) go there is nothing out of the ordinary, the real wonder being saved for the selection of decadent yet modernly innovative desserts.
