The ViewLondon Review
The New Globe makes the most of its location, appealing to students despite its lack of flashy gimmicks.
The Venue
Sat on the side of a bridge overlooking a canal, The New Globe unfortunately gains nothing from the ‘nice’ location below it. Positioned by the side of busy Mile End Road, the pub’s facade guzzles the emissions of thousands of cars a day and drinking outside ends up being about as relaxing as standing on the side of a motorway.
The pub itself boasts a large size spread across two floors. There is a basic simplicity within its wood and stone tiled look. It spices itself up with colourful plastic chairs with holes through them that make them look like mutated descendents of Crocs sandels. The space downstairs is empty of any real intimacy and is best for groups and parties.
The Atmosphere
The New Globe relies heavily on the local student population who rule the road. It markets itself as a mature alternative to the flashy gimmicks of its competition and succeeds in attracting a relaxed crowd. This is still just a student pub though, and it fills up in the evenings as drinks are chugged. There are no big screens here, but music is important with DJs playing late in the week and on weekends.
The Food
The New Globe is all about the burgers, with a good range all for around £4 with chips and salad. There is also a modest selection of standard pub food.
The Drink
The multiple chalkboards in the windows sell the pub’s liquid attractions with big lists of drink deals displayed. If you can find ten friends then you could purchase the bucket of ten Carlsbergs for £10, and for a more intimate date scenario try the two Jaeger Bombs for £5 deal to help lubricate the conversation. There is a good selection of bottled beer but the draught range is limited, including Stella and Carlsberg. There are also £1 shots.
The Last Word
Around this area the pickings can appear quite slim, but despite the boring interior the New Globe has a strong weekend following and becomes a total P-A-R-T-Y. Good for students.
