Very tiny inside with only 3 tables and a few bar stools, but great if the weather allows you to stand outside to enjoy a pint.

ent after work on a Thursday and it was packed with a mix of all ages and styles.

Very cute little pie restaurant upstairs which I will be back to. Would go back anytime for a relaxed after work drink.

This is real hidden gem of a pub hidden off the beaten track on Rathbone Street.

The beer is good and the staff are friendly. The landlady, Tracy, is always very welcoming.

The real attraction here are the pies though. A wide selection of regular favourites and daily specials are served upstairs in the pie room.

If you can find room for a desert, there are some good English favourites with a choice of crumbles, bread and butter pudding etc.

You just can't keep me away from a great pub.

I visit the Newman Arms frequently as i live and work nearby. I have no idea what the previous review is about as there isn't a landlord...?

Great traditional pub, always extremely welcoming and can't do enough for their customers.

The pies are brilliant as also noted by a local famous restauranter.

Not to be missed when you're in the area.

Rudest landlord i know, service is dire and to be honest they ruined our night out. Lots of nice pubs around that part of town, avoid like the plague and don't believe the hype.

The Newman Arms is a great pub. The reviews that are on the site are left by the same group, who had a bad experience. I also had a bad experience when they were at my pub. Anyway, just to let readers of these bad reviews know, we are winning more awards than ever:

2007 - No. 3 in top 1000 things to do in London (Time Out)

2006 - No. 2 in Greatest West End pubs (Time Out)

2005 - Fancy a pint Top Pub and Restaurant

2003 - The pie club formed by customers, a piece of artwork donated.

2002 - Saatchi and Saatchi Best Pub in London (testimonial from operations director on Newman website)

2001 - Best English Pub and Pie (Figaro Magazine, Japan)

1999 - Top Place To Eat (London’s Talking)

1996 - Pie Restaurant Of The Year (Evening Standard ES magazine)

1994 and 1995 - Egon Ronay award.

Not a review, but a question..

Are the pies you get in this pub the real thing or are they simply stews with a puff pastry top?

A real, traditional London pie can be picked up your hand as it has a top, bottom and sides made of pastry.

However, what you find these days is that a lot of pubs simply make a stew and place a bit of puff pastry on top and pretend it's a pie. Yes, it's cheaper and easier to make it this way, but we are in danger of losing our great city's traditional ways

As this pub claims to be hundreds of years old, I'd hope they keep the tradition of real pie-making.

But do they?

I visited the Newman Arms ten years ago when it was winning awards. I was impressed. This year in 2007 I was about to take 3 U.S. friends there for a pie and pint. But after reading the reviews it has been getting, I will not be going. No wonder it doesn't get any more awards. I am disappointed.

The Newman Arms may as well not be there it's so small, most times I've been I've ended up stood outside cos' it's been so packed (i.e. there were another couple of people in there).

The main attraction used to be the upstairs pie room but, though the pies are very nice they are also very pricey. For the price they charge you'd expect decent service but what my work colleagues and I received was far from it. Whilst deciding what to have for dessert the bill was unceremoniously plonked in front of us, we were told we'd already had our hour (no-one told us there was a time limit beforehand and service wasn't exactly rapid) and just to confound matters were charged a £10 cover charge. That's 10 customers the Newman Arms have definitely lost, which is pretty much a full house for this quaint but pokey little watering hole.

I used to really enjoy the Newman Arms, it had good atmosphere and great food but it seems for 2006 they've changed the layout downstairs and got some ridiculous laws in place for eating at lunchtime. We had barely got our pies in front of us before being given the bill (without asking for it) and being told to leave just after the last mouthful went down as they have HOUR long time slots now...no desert, no digestive? Plus each person had a cover charge added to their meal which we couldn't understand...
The Newman Arms gets a John boy 2/10 and it's only a 2 because of the previous good times...somethings gone horribly wrong at Newman Arms!
