The North Pole restaurant is situated in a central location moments from Greenwich Rail and DLR Station. The restaurant combines high standards of service and food making the North Pole a great choice for diners looking for an intimate setting to enjoy a romantic meal or share a celebration with friends.

The Venue
The North Pole is located above a bar which looks like a traditional London pub. Its appearance is very different once inside, with the venue taking on the appearance of a historic banqueting room. The decor is traditionally English with a warm fireplace, although the Rat Pack memorabilia gives an American influence to the furnishings. Walls are finished in dark blue and bold red colours while a piano provides a distinctive focal point of the dining area. The ceiling light fittings, complete with live goldfish swimming inside, provide an unusual feature in both the main and fine dining rooms.

The Atmosphere
Although appearing quiet in the early evening, the North Pole becomes busy as the night goes on. Staff are friendly and provide a professional, thorough service through taking the time to care for their guests with simple touches such as taking coats, ensuring glasses are topped up and generally looking after diners. Subtle jazz music, linking back to the swing theme of the restaurant, provides welcome background sounds to relax to by candlelight.

The Food
The menu at the North Pole is varied with ample choices for vegetarians and meat eaters alike, with around ten choices for starter and main courses and five options for dessert. Starters range from about £5 - £8, mains from £13 - £15.50 and desserts from £5.50 - £7. Staff provide hungry diners with warm crusty bread and soft English butter to enjoy while reviewing the menu. Starters include a lamb patty, a burger-like dish created with tender meat mixed with subtle herbs, onions and peppers. The dish is well presented and substantial for a first course. Another hearty option is the ham and cheese salad – a warm, crisp salad with a sweet citrus sauce on a bed of fluffy cous cous, garnished with chives and sharp cherry tomatoes.

Main courses include a colourful, medium-sized mushroom tart served with salad and wonderfully soft asparagus that melts in the mouth. The tart is made with soft pastry on which the soft, creamy centre lies. The dish has a strong pepper flavour that works well with the crisp vine tomato and mozzarella salad. The British lamb with sweet potato is another excellent option with a thick, tender and succulent portion of lamb forming the focal point of a very well presented dish. The lamb is soft and slices cleanly from the bone with minimal effort, whilst the thick meaty gravy prevents the dish from becoming dry. The lamb is accompanied by a crusty and crispy sweet potato cake which is filled with stringy sweet potato and soft colourful vegetables. This spicy square helping of vegetables is quite dry. Diners should remember to order side dishes, priced around £4 each, as the dishes do not come with extras unless stated.

Desserts at the North Pole are presented well and often large in size so may be great to share. A sweet apple and almond tart is served with thick cream and dusted with powder with a tangy berry garnish. This dish is served with thin mint crisps made with medium strength dark chocolate which complements the apple flavour of the dish perfectly. The strawberry cheesecake is another popular choice, served with a fruit parcel in sweet casing and drizzled in a sticky, rich strawberry sauce.

The Drink
The wine list here is extensive with a tangy, citrus infused house Sauvignon Blanc starting at £14.50. Many rose and red options are available to suit all pockets, while draft and bottle beers are served alongside a full cocktail and spirit menu. A wide range of tea and boutique coffees are offered to diners at the end of their meal.

The Last Word
The North Pole is a stylish restaurant which provides well cooked appealing dishes within a slightly formal but unpretentious environment.
