Sorry to disagree with some of you but, nice pub for sure.....shame about the Manager Alex Harris. What a bully, and very VERY grumpy individual. Witnessed many incidences of his over the top reactions with both staff and punters who had done nothing wrong at all. Doesn't seem very happy soul working there. Perhaps he's about to have a breakdown? Whatever the reasons he ruins the atmosphere with his stone cold face and rude behaviour. I like relaxed surroundings but here I felt on edge and scared to order a drink?!
A message to the Manager's employers-sack bad staff like this rude grump of a man, he's giving what is essentially a decent pub, a really bad image! For these reasons, I won't be coming back, plenty other pubs to spend my hard earned money in and get better value as don't rate the food nor the service from his 'couldn't be bothered' staff. They must be hacked off working under such an abusive and angry man all the time!!
I love North Star, it has a great atmosphere, good food and reasonably priced. Staff are very friendly, always smiling which is a must in giving great customer service. Who wants to be served by a miserable so and so? Always busy which is a give away to the first timer wondering what the service is like, it's excellent I can't fault it. Well done to all the staff keep up the excellent work. Regards Andrea xxx
Every so often, the owners "mitchell & Butlers" changes the manger. Normally they find a manager the suits the pub, rather than finding a pub for the manager to change. Once upon a time the food at the North Star was worth writing about, the staff was friendly and helpful, the Music was sophisticated. Now, it seems like it that has all changed. One review on this site mentioned that the food was well below par. The staff were not understanding of value for money. And to top it all off, they are getting rid of the Dj's to turn the North Star in to another Town House. My confession is that, I am a former Head Resident dj at the North Star. The Dj's was the key in creating an image for the North Star that stood out from any other pub in Ealing. The hard work an effort that went into forming the ambience, was rewarded by a similar music policy being implemented in other Mitchell & Butler pubs around London, The Castle, The Sportsmans to name but a few. I'm a true fan of the North Star, I'm gutted that it has and will continue to change for the worse.
I went to the North Star last Sunday (19th April) to catch up with some friends for lunch.
My friends went for the roast (which they said was tough and stringy), and I went for a lighter option: Humous with crudites and flatbread.
The portion of carrots and cucumber sticks was generous, as was the 5-6 strips of flatbread, but the humous came in a teeny tiny ketchup pot.
Obviously, I finished the humous very quickly and politely asked the passing waiter whether it'd be possible to get a cheeky top-up. He said to me: "That's the portion."
When I explained that the portion ratio was all wrong, he just stared blankly and said, "That's the portion. You'll have to pay for more."
When I asked to see a manager, he said "Okay," and then failed to send anyone out to speak to me.
Not undeterred, I went and sought out the manager (turned out to be an assistant manager).
He said the same thing ("That's the portion") but admitted that it was an "epic fail" for the waiter not to have alerted him to the issue when I'd asked to see someone.
I explained that I lived in Ealing, came to this pub often with friends and was disappointed that their customer service could not be altered slightly for a bit of humous (which probably equates to, at best, a cost of 25p to them).
Don't know about the drinks - we had bottled Magners - but I will not be returning to the North Star.
There are plenty of other places in Ealing to go. I would suggest that the manager of this pub rethinks his/her customer service strategy which currently seems to be: "The customer is always wrong."
