The ViewLondon Review
Northbank bar sits quietly on the banks of the Thames, just waiting to serve up some of its individual and imaginative cocktails to a discerning crowd.
The Venue
Northbank has scored a beautiful spot right on the river, just below the Millennium Bridge and right by St Paul’s Cathedral, and overlooking the Tate Modern. The bar is dark and atmospheric, with leather banquettes, dark wood and extremely funky lights. Strategically placed candles scattered around make it romantic but not too intimate, and floor to ceiling windows ensure the view can be enjoyed.
The Atmosphere
Chilled out. The proximity of the bar to the City means it’s becoming popular for post-work drinks, but equally couples can snuggle up in a corner.
The Drink
Cocktails reflect the enthusiastic use of British ingredients in the adjoining restaurant. A prime example is the cream tea martini, with strawberries, vodka, and a miniature scone with clotted cream. Other treats included Queen Of The Moor, with gin, rhubarb, fresh mint and rose champagne, a bubbly treat not too strong and awash with the delicate flavours of mint and rhubarb. The Oven Roasted Peach Margarita is served in a frozen martini glass, with the heady tequila mix poured over squishy fresh peaches. Although the bitterness of the lime and the strength of the tequila can still be tasted, the peach adds a delightful sweetness to the traditional drink.
The bar menu is so extensive, nobody can fail to find something they like. There’s plenty of bubbly, and a large selection of whiskies. Mead and sherry makes it onto the menu, and the impressive wine list that stretches from Sussex to Lebanon is sure to have something for even the most discerning drinker – there’s even parsnip wine. Real ales from Cornwall and Spanish lagers adorn the beer list for those yearning for yeast. Bar snacks are a treat as well – home-made pork scratchings are and ideal salty snack to accompany a cold beer, and there’s potted shrimps and scampi for fish lovers.
The Last Word
Worth a visit for the views and location alone, Northbank will surprise and delight with its fantastic range of drinks, food and friendly atmosphere.
