The ViewLondon Review
Sitting surreptitiously between rows of terraced houses, in an up and coming art community living and working out of converted warehouses, the Oakdale Arms bridges a gap between old and new North London with its rough and ready eclectic style. The VenueHidden away from outsiders and sitting several minutes’ walk from any main roads, the Oakdale Arms is a local treasure, loved for its approachable atmosphere as much as its no frills decor.
Retaining a traditional pub feel, the seats are comfortable and the patterns on the walls and floor clash. Customers are well provided for in terms of facilities: there is a pub garden and a games room - that comes complete with a pool table and dartboard - as well as numerous books scattered on windowsills. There is also a free quiz night on Thursdays and a choice of video games for anyone looking for entertainment, and in winter there is a heated van for smokers.
The AtmosphereThe clientele at the Oakdale Arms straddle two distinct divides, with long time locals drinking beside newcomers from the arts set who are currently moving into the area. The result is an eclectic and friendly atmosphere. The bar staff expect to know their customers but are helpful and efficient to all. The pace is slow and relaxed rather than buzzing and there is often a gathering of regulars around the bar who are willing to share a drink and a chat.
The DrinkThe Oakdale Arms is proud to show off its excellent selection of real ales, which would make any CAMRA member proud. Regular draught ale includes beers from the Milton Brewery like Pegasus, Jupiter, Minotaur and Nero. However, with eight hand pumps they also have additional regularly rotating options like Buntingford Polar Star, Milton Dionysus, Nethergate Lemon Head and Slaters top totty to name a few.
Lager lovers are offered Czech Budweiser Budvar on draught alongside a huge range of bottled beer that includes everything from Budweiser to Amstel, Becks, Carlsberg, Fosters Fruh Kolsch, Harbin and Hoegaarden to name but a few. If you’re really not into beer then a spirit and a mixer will set you back less than £3 and they offer a nice selection of single malts.
The Last WordIf you’re looking for a party night or a trendy wine bar then the Oakdale Arms is best avoided, but for a night of real North London charm this is a hidden goldmine.
