The ViewLondon Review
Situated adjacent to Sutton train station, The Old Bank is a good place for a pit stop during the commute home.
The Venue
The Old Bank is a traditionally decorated pub which, as its name suggests, had a former life as a bank. Thanks to this its interior is quite bright and airy, with some original Victorian features such as large sash windows and high ceilings. Two large flat screens flank the walls to ensure you get a bird’s eye view of the sporting events, which are shown regularly.
The Atmosphere
The age range is over-21s, but this pub markets itself more towards sports than music so you will find people from all ages here; anything from fresh-faced locals up to OAPs. During the week it is mainly office and shop workers that gather here but this pub has its fair share of regulars and locals, too. If you fancy a breath of fresh air, there is an outside terrace area that's popular in warmer weather.
The Food
The Old Bank is part of the Smith & Jones brand (which in turn is part of the Barracuda group), so you can expect a reasonably priced and varied menu. Starters, wraps, jackets and sharers are great for a snack, and the duck and hoisin wrap with baby gem lettuce and chips on the side is £5.25.
There is a list of Smith & Jones own recipe burgers, priced from £5.30. A 16oz mixed grill with peas, chips, grilled tomato and mushroom is £9.99; the all day breakfast is £6.25; and a Hunters chicken with chips and a salad garnish is £7.99.
There are also a couple of competitively priced offers on during the week: Thursday night is curry night when a curry costs £5.99 with a free drink; Friday night is grill night where you get a free drink with any item from the char-grill menu.
The Drink
There are at least 12 choices of lager, beer and cider on draught. The likes of Strongbow, Fosters, John Smiths and Stella are available, and the average price of a pint is £3.20. The bottled equivalent averages £3.60 for Heineken, Bulmers and Budweiser.
White and red wine costs as little as £1.99 for a glass or £8.95 for the bottle. House champagne is priced £22.50 a bottle, or you can push the boat out a bit with the Veuve Clicquot (£37.50).
The Last Word
A mediocre pub offering a reasonably priced range of pub grub and booze, The Old Bank is nothing out of the ordinary.
