I used to frequent his bar often due to its location as a nice riverside pub, however I have since revised my opinion after a specific visit. Generally it is quite a nice pub to have an after work drink, however it does get very busy with tourists and the like at about 6:00 especially on a friday.
The Particular evening that has made me never return to this pub, I was having a few beers after work, being a younger crowd we are used to being asked for ID. However this particular evening when my friend was asked for ID his full UK driving licnese was rejected on the grounds that the manager thought it was too thin... I did not know their was a requirement for thickness for an ID and couldnt believe that a pub wont accept a valid UK driving license but I was unfortunately enlightened when my whole group of friends where kicked out for being underage even though we are all at least 24 and all had a photo driving license to prove it. The manager clearly knew he was in the wrong but refused to change his decision as a result if you are below the age of 25 maybe even higher i would suggest another pub, as the manager in this one does not understand the ID system
It’s such a pity that the staff of this lovely pub located on the bank of the Thames is so rude and unpleasant!
A friend of mine and I called in to have lunch after seeing a performance at The Globe, so it was after 3 p.m. We managed to find a table on the terrace and were going to enjoy a pleasant lunch enjoying the view of the riverside. I went to the bar since at that time waiters didn’t take orders. After waiting a quarter of an hour in the line I was queue-jumped by a guy just before my turn. The barman called Darren served him the beer, but I didn’t say a word avoiding confrontations. Then I started ordering.
To begin with, I asked the bartender to recommend me an English beer, but he served me an Italian one, since –as he explained- he hadn’t heard the part of “English” and the Italian was his recommendation. He didn’t want to serve me another pint since the Italian one was already put in the glasses. When I was going to ask for the meal he asked the number of the table, which I didn’t know and I told him I was going to check this. He replayed that he wasn’t going to wait for me because of the queue. I asked whether he could take my order when I’m back without making me wait all the line again, but he said no. I asked for a complaints book, and he answered that I had to wait till he attend all the people in the line. That Darren guy was unhelpful, rude and unpleasant all the time.
I went back to the table and find its number, it was put in a small dot on the corener of the table. It seemed to be a normal practice in English pubs, but we weren’t avare about this. Eventually my friend and I decided not to drink the Italian beer we paid for and to have lunch in another pub enjoying local food and beverages.
The service at the Old Thames Inn has never once been good on the many occasions when I have visited but I love the location so when summer comes round i generally pay it a visit.
However my most recent visit a few days ago will be my last due to being told that my 2 pints of (post-mix not bottled) Diet Coke came to the total of just over £8! I was shocked and appalled at this as where so many of the customers waiting around the bar when they overheard.
The barman had little to offer in terms of a reason as to why the cokes where so ridiculously expensive expect to tell me that 2 pints of larger would be cheaper........ i didn't want larger!
So unless you're willing to have terrible service and to pay £8 for 2 cokes then i'd recommend looking elsewhere around this area (of which there are plenty of other GOOD pubs who value their customers)
I've visited this pub on 3 occasions and each has been disappointing with the latest showing the staff to be so rude and unhelpful. I called in with 3 friends for Sunday lunch. Starters are advertised on the menu, but I was told in no uncertain terms that it was impossible for the kitchen to deliver starters and main course separately (despite their menu claiming that they aim to deliver a first class service!). I asked to speak to the manager about what seemed like a ludicrous situation and he had more attitude than the staff.
The good thing about the location of this pub is that there are many better places within a 5 minute walk.
I highly recommend you try somewhere else for a much more pleasant dining experience.
I stopped here for a pint when showing visitors 'the sights'. I was impressed with the range of beers on offer, and they were kept well.
The (Spanish/new) barmaid didn't know what bitter shandy was however went and asked the bar manager who showed her, which is fair enough.
The prices were OK and there was plenty of outdoor seating.I wouldn't travel here for the pub's sake alone but would come back here if I was in the area.
Old Thameside Inn receives a high amount of local and tourist clientele based on its location. Bearing this in mind I assumed there would be good service and decent food. But the food was certainy not worth the money and the service I received was rude and unhelpful. If you find yourself looking for a place to eat and have a drink along the river, its worth your while walking past Old Thameside Inn to the next pub.
We always have a great night out at the Old Thameside Inn. It is in such a handy location and is a good drop in for after work. In summer the outdoor seating gets packed so get there early. The Old Thameside Inn has reasonably priced drinks and is worth a look.
