The ViewLondon Review
Sharing the stage with a number of pubs and bars in the area, O’Neills Blackheath manages to prove its worth.
The Venue
Located centrally in Blackheath Village, O’Neills Blackheath is one of only a handful of businesses in the area that is part of a major chain, but that’s not to say it doesn’t have its place. Inside, there is a large wooden-floored bar area comprising standard seating. There are also a few comfortable booths located towards the back on the venue that provide a cosier setting for a few drinks – handy if there’s a sporting event being shown that you’d rather not bother with.
The Atmosphere
As with most pubs, the vibe at O’Neills Blackheath is very different depending on when you go. The weekends - Friday nights in particular - can be extremely busy and you should expect a wait to get in and be served at the bar. At these times a visit is much more of a night out and the clientele reflect that. However, pop in on a weeknight or an afternoon and the atmosphere is much more chilled out, with good music and a fairly diverse set of customers, from those sitting alone enjoying a pint to small groups of mates and couples.
The Food
A menu typical of all O’Neills pubs can be found here, offering standard pub fare from burgers and sandwiches to main meals, with prices cheap in comparison with other pubs in the area. The quality isn’t outstanding and the staff seem confused by table numbers at slightly busier times (plates of once hot food may travel around the bar until lukewarm), but considering what you pay it isn’t half bad and the flavours are there. If you’re after a pub lunch without breaking the bank then this is the place to be.
The Drink
There is enough to keep most happy here, with Guinness undoubtedly a popular choice - and it goes down very well. There is an adequately varied, although not hugely exciting, selection of beers both bottled and on tap, as well as a small number of decent quality wines to choose from. Prices in general are reasonable for the area.
The Last Word
By no means the best pub you will ever go to, but at its best O’Neills Blackheath is a thoroughly decent venue for a few drinks and a bite to eat.
