The ViewLondon Review
Paternoster offers a great atmosphere and beer selection, in a venue that brings together tradition and modernity.
The Venue
Located at the corner of a busy street and a back alley, this duality is key to the appeal of this pub. The decor at Paternoster mixes tradition with modern touches, although the end result leans towards the latter.
Here you will find traditional carpet on a raised platform, Chesterfield sofas and wooden wall panels mixed with funky orange lights, contemporary furniture, floral lampshades in black and gold, and striped upholstery. The final effect is effortlessly cool - Paternoster looks edgy and interesting. The long bar is at the back of this medium-sized watering hole and leaves plenty of room for the seating area. There are also some popular tables and chairs on the pedestrian-only passage outside.
The Atmosphere
Vibrant is the word. City workers love this pub, probably because despite their patronage, the place is not packed every night. People come to unwind and relax - talking about work is kept to a minimum and beer flows as jackets and ties are removed and sleeves are rolled up. The atmosphere is really friendly and you will feel welcome, suited or not. It is also a great venue for groups of all sizes.
The Food
To highlight how friendly and group-orientated the place is, Paternoster serves a selection of sharing boards (£10-£11). Platters include themes like pizza, barbecue, deli, British cheeses or sausages. Feeling hungry? Choose from traditional British small plates (£4-£8.50), large plates (£8.50-£14) or sandwiches (£5-£6.50).
Tempting options include barbeque baby pork ribs in sticky sauce, a free range Devonshire chicken fillet burger, Somerset pork belly and a smoked salmon club sandwich.
The Drink
This is a Young’s pub, so you can expect to find their beers, including the seasonal Kew, Wells Banana Bread, Honeydew and Double Chocolate stout. They are also particularly well stocked with Young’s ales. Alternatively, other draught options include Peroni, Heineken, Kronenburg and Amstel (£3.08-4.20) or bottled Budweiser, Corona, Becks, Budvar and Pilsner Urquell (£1.86-4.23).
They also stock a decent wine list - they serve a dozen reds (£14.50-£28.50 a bottle with a few small and large glasses available) and as many whites (£14.50-£26). Rose, port, muscat and the ever-present Champagne are also available.
The Last Word
If you’re looking to unwind after your daily drudgery then a trip to Paternoster is recommended.
