A rare Kensington gem, Piano combines class and sophistication with individual charm and good old fashioned fun.

The Venue
Although Piano is slap bang opposite High Street Ken tube you could be forgiven for never noticing it was there. The tiny downstairs entrance is unassuming with a narrow, dimly lit staircase leading you into the one long room that is Piano. With a bar at one end, a grand piano at the other and about 20 candlelit tables crammed in between, Piano is a small and intimate venue which somehow immediately sets expectations of great things to come.

The Atmosphere
Piano is all about atmosphere. The bar buzzes with a low hum of conversation from early evening and steadily fills up until every table is full and more besides. Owner Bazz takes to the piano at around 6.30pm starting things off at a sedate pace. This means it is possible to enjoy conversation over dinner both between and during sets. As the night wears on the live music ranges through an eclectic mix of background mood music, ballads and crowd pleasers all executed with finesse.

By the end it of the night it is not unusual to find people singing along and dancing in the aisles, or indeed wherever they can find room. Piano is one of those unusually versatile venues that lends itself well to most occasions. Perfect for an intimate date, it is also a great place to bring a group of friends although make sure to call and book ahead.

The Food
Sadly the food is definitely a supporting actor in this show. The menu offers limited choices and the discerning diner is unlikely to find anything to truly get excited about. On the plus side the large slices of bruschetta come heavily loaded with tomato and the main courses also come in hearty portions. All the food is well prepared and the relative lack of choice means that dishes arrive promptly and unobtrusively.

The Drink
The bar serves a standard selection of beer and the wine is reasonably priced and distinctly drinkable. Don’t bother ordering by the glass, you are bound to stay for more than just one.

The Last Word
Piano is a closely guarded secret by those in the know – keep it that way.
