The ViewLondon Review
A cosy old-fashioned English pub with a quintessentially village feel, The Pineapple is a stone’s throw away from the bustle of Kentish Town.
The Venue
Just a short walk from Kentish Town tube station, The Pineapple is a Victorian conversion tucked away on the corner of residential backstreets. A bit like entering another world, you pass through a velvet curtain and are hit by the warmth of a burning fire (on colder days), relaxed chatter and the delicious smell of Thai food. There is old-fashioned red velvet seating on either side of the bar and an open fireplace to the far left. A narrow corridor leads round to the rear, where a cosy conservatory provides more seating. Access to the beer garden is found here, where there are heaters for the colder months. The décor is kept to a minimum throughout, but pictures of birds decorate the walls in the conservatory and large red lampshades provide soft lighting.
The Atmosphere
As The Pineapple is off the beaten track, it is predominantly a local’s pub and is relaxed and homely, with a mixed crowd of thirtysomethings and older patrons. But non-regulars won’t feel out of place or suffer an icy stare. It undoubtedly has a village feel to it, with board games at the ready and a regular quiz night. The staff are attentive and friendly, and pets are allowed too.
The Food
If you like cheap and easy Thai, then you can’t go wrong trying out some of The Pineapple’s menu. There are the standard green, yellow and red curries to choose from as well as phad Thai and various soup and noodle dishes. If you want your curry milder, the kitchen will do so if you request. Prices are about £7.50 a dish and are good value for money. If you just fancy a snack, choose the prawn crackers, which are served with a tasty chilli dip.
The Drink
The Pineapple has a selection of real ales, which rotate regularly. The delights on offer include Adnams, Sambrook’s and Redemption's Urban Dusk. There is also a decent selection of lagers including Stella, Staropramen, and Becks on tap, and these cost around £3.50 a pint. In addition there's a small selection of red and white wines to choose from and the usual spirits are on offer.
The Last Word
A great mix of old-fashioned Englishness and Oriental cuisine. If you are tired of the usual Camden boozers, then make a detour to The Pineapple. It’s a breath of fresh air.
