The ViewLondon Review
Absolutely packed on most days of the week, the Plough and Harrow is a large Wetherspoon’s pub that attracts bargain-hunters, booze hounds and a fair share of the area’s Irish population.
The Venue
With prices that make grown men go weak at the knees, the Plough and Harrow sells every imaginable type of high street booze at prices that compete with the local off-licences.
A huge bar along the right-hand side keeps the punters happy and the room is packed with tables and chairs to make sure the old fellas all have a seat. The odd screen is dotted around showing Sky Sports News on silent but that’s about your lot in the way of entertainment.
The Atmosphere
Men with gin-blossomed cheeks sit along those with a ghostly pallor but it’s not just old timers – there are a few young wrong ‘uns getting involved in the bargain booze. Don’t get the wrong impression though – the atmosphere is good-natured and not at all intrusive.
The Food
Deals like the burger, chips and a pint for around £5-£6 may prompt the warning signals to go off in your head but the quality is not as terrible as you might imagine – in fact, it’s okay. A massive menu, including special deals, a kid’s menu and steaks and grills is all priced at a point that will have you wondering how they manage to do it.
The Drink
Kronie, Carlsberg and Stella are overshadowed by several ales such as Copperknob, Flying Dutchmen and Ruddles. Staff wear ale festival T-shirts and these events take place at Wetherspoon’s venues on a regular basis. Bottles of Hardy’s Shiraz are less than £8 and a large G&T is about £3, showing this is clearly the place for the thrifty dedicated drinker.
The Last Word
No-frills, some of the cheapest drinks in town and a fair amount of Irish punters – the Plough and Harrow is good for a pint or two with the old fella.
