The ViewLondon Review
As the name suggests, this pub used to be a place for pommelers (people who pummel in the leather trade). Now it’s just a dingy Wetherspoons pub packed full of frazzled tourists and bored locals. The VenueThe dark green and red colours of Pommelers Rest stand out from the surroundings, as the signs beckon in thirsty punters. Inside, this palette has been echoed throughout, creating a depressing, dull decor that desperately needs some light. The carpet is similarly awful, with a random pattern that seems to tell tourists British people like tacky prints in their pubs. Some traditional features are present, such as antique lighting and wooden partitions; however, these have been added by a modern hand, therefore seem fake and unconvincing.
The AtmosphereDue to the close proximity of tourist hotspots like the Tower of London and The London Dungeons, there are always lots of folks around - usually in large groups or families - with the obligatory camera around the neck and map in hand looking extremely sick of the weather. They are friendly enough with each other, but there is a lack of a cohesive pub atmosphere as every table is chatting amongst themselves in their mother tongue. That is, unless you count the regulars, but they seem more interested in drinking their pint than talking. However, the staff at Pommelers Rest are relatively upbeat at all times, and very speedy in their service.
The DrinkPommelers Rest prides itself on serving real ales, which is does well with six ales permanently on tap and regularly changing guest ales to excite fans. There are plenty of other choices if you don’t fancy ale, such as the usual beers that are available in most pubs like Fosters and Kronenberg, alongside a list of spirits. And, of course, lots of soft drinks for teetotallers. The wine list is poor and not well promoted, unlike the beer and ale, which are given multiple deals with the typical British pub grub that Wetherspoon pubs serve. Another Wetherspoon trademark is also upheld - all the prices are cheap, very cheap, so no harm will be done to the bank balance.
The Last WordIt’s a shame that the bulk of the tourists visiting this area of London may be led to believe that Pommelers Rest is a traditional English pub. If that’s the case, they’ll be sorely disappointed.
