Great little pub with excellent menu, all made in house. Good selection of bar snacks and great cocktails.
Will be back very soon!

Last night (Mon April 5th) I came into the pub at about 9.15 and ordered a pint of Doom Bar bitter. After I had paid for it I realised that the barman had served it in a mug so I asked him politely if he would mind transferring it to a straight glass. He said he couldnt do that as he didnt have any 'Doom Bar' glasses. I said I didnt care about that and he could pour it into any straight glass he liked. He then said he couldnt do this as it was illegal to put beer from one supplier into a glass for another. I thought this was pretty bizarre and silly as even if it is true I've often been served beer in 'different' glasses. When I pointed this out he said , 'Well I don't' in a rather supercilious manner. I then noticed some plain straight glasses on the bar and asked him to use one of those. He said he couldnt do that as they weren't pint glasses ! I said that didnt matter as I could top the glass up when I had drunk some of the beer but he still refused. At this point I was kind of dumbfounded and went and sat down to read the paper. I was waiting for my girlfriend and when she arrived I opted to leave half my pint and get out of the place. Having to pay an exorbitant £3.50 for a pint of bitter and then be told I can't drink it out of a glass of my choice is the pits of bar service as far as I'm concerned. I've since mentioned this incident to several regular beer drinkers I know and nobody finds it anything but incredulous. I can't believe this guy is doing their business any favours which might be borne out by the fact that there were only about 2 other people in the bar at the time. I tried the email address on the website but it bounced.

This is a great pub with great food.

The staff (Joe, Bernie and Merrick) also back this up with great service and always keen to have a laugh and chat even during the busy times!!

Would recommend this place to anyone in the Putney area and surrounding.

Me and friend decided to brave it and finally try the new food at the POW, whose menu has always seemed really incongruous to its surroundings. On top of that I'd always been put off the ongoing staff training and churn, who don't really know what the food and clearly have never worked in a restaurant that charges the kinds of prices you do. However the menu looks interesting and the staff are friendly, so we took the plunge. I had the lamb breast and my friend had the confit of chicken. My friends chicken was unfortunatley very dry, but my lamb was absolutely superb. When our waitress asked us if the meal was OK I told her the chicken was dry but the lamb was excellent. She was very pleasant and appreciated our honesty. We then went to pay and the bar manager (I think that's who he was) asked us how the food was and the waitress spoke on our behalf. The bar manager sheepishly said 'sorry/oh well..errrrr, £34.10 please', so the waitress suggested that he take some money off for the chicken. There was more hesitation and then to our surprise the bar mananger said; 'well I haven't charged for service so that'll be alright'. Let me just explain the number of reasons why what the bar manager said was so wrong.

1. He should not contradict his waitress who has been serving us in front of the customer

2. He should not be the one to decide whether we pay service or not, it is our choice

3. Service charge should have nothing to do with food anyway

4. He shouldn't remove his waitresses service charge in front of customers

5. And finally there shouldn't really be service charge anyway, as it's not a restaurant, you have to order at the bar, so I dont expect it to be on the bill anyway.

....so there we have it. Nice staff with a very evident lack of experience, as people who clearly haven't worked in restaurants (or least ones that charge the kinds of prices POW does.

If there is a more relaxed, quaint example of what exactly a gastro pub should be in London I have yet to find it. Food is delicious and the prices are very reasonable. If you want a pub that also offers a warm atmosphere then I've come across few better unless you have time to head to the cotswolds for a quick pint. I'm not living in Putney but often do meet mates here as it offers all that a pub should. Food, atmosphere and very friendly staff. Was there just before Christmas and was perfect for a few pints and a great roast. Have been there also on a Sunday for quiz night which is a good laugh esp if you feel like giving your brain a workout while sampling a real ale or 6..

I went to this Pub today for dinner on saturday, and i have to be honest it was amazing. The place is pubby, relaxed and welcoming, the food is a very good take on british cooking. The Potted Goose with Cranberry chutney was delicious, and the Venison Pie was awesome. Considering the decor, value for money and the food, i think this is one of the best food pub's that i have been to in London. I hope that it continues to do well. 5/5

This pub is both sophisticated and welcoming, a brilliant touch is the personalised tankards for the regulars - I intend to become one! The ox cheek on parsley risotto and a foie gras stuffed marrow bone looked sensational and tasted it too.

The boys that work at the Prince of Wales are what makes the place - good work lads!! They also know how to pour a decent Guinness.
The Prince of Wales is a good Putney pub that has comfy sofas and Sky TV.
