The ViewLondon Review
Don’t be put off by the ugly duckling exterior, a pleasant surprise awaits inside.
The Venue
Located on a busy main road, the exterior of this pub greatly disappoints and in no way attracts custom. This is not for want of trying though, attempts have been made to dress up the ugly appearance of the Prince William Henry with modern furniture, potted plants and large menu boards but, unfortunately, no matter how hard they try they’ll never make the '70s council flat exterior look any better.
If you can look beyond this and actually venture into the pub, you’ll be pleasantly surprised with what you see. The old fashioned dark wood decor has been given a modern twist with patterned sofas and comfy contemporary stools. The roomy layout of wooden tables and chairs provide a good area for dining and in the summer months there is a more than ample selection of outdoor benches for enjoying the summer sun. Ironically though, this one redeeming exterior factor may be let down by the venue’s location and proximity to the busy road.
The Atmosphere
Lunchtimes and evenings see a business orientated clientele at Prince William Henry with workers from the local offices coming in for lunch or after work drinks. Although not as popular as its riverside neighbours, the less busy venue is a welcoming break from the crowds, but it’s unfortunate that it isn’t favoured more. The friendly staff are very attentive and not too pushy, and the whole venue has a relaxed and welcoming vibe.
The Food
With a good selection of daily changing homemade specials like smoked salmon salad and pate on toast, plus a complete menu of pub favourites like bangers and mash and pies, the reasonably priced menu is generally tasty and well portioned, providing good value all round.
The Drink
Serving a variety of the regular beers, bottles and spirits, Prince William Henry also offers a good selection of ales like Bombardier and Youngs Winter Warmer for the cold dreary days. There’s also an extensive selection of world wines to choose from.
The Last Word
Don’t let first impressions spoil your view of this secret little South Bank gem, the Prince William Henry does have something to offer.
