The ViewLondon Review
Located underneath the slabs of Commercial Street, Public Life is a venue with a difference, bringing a whole new meaning to the phrase 'underground party'. Arisen from the ashes of a once public convenience, start thinking again if spending an evening in a loo may not be your idea of fun.
The Venue
Public Life is an unusual plot, having been everything from a public toilet to a gallery and pub. However, over the last three years it has become more well known for its nightclub activities. Now the chequered black and white floor has become one of London’s quirkier spots and requires investigation even if you’re not keen to party there.
The Atmosphere
With its maximum capacity of 100+ people, the atmosphere at Public Life has no choice but to be vibrant. Always buzzing, sometimes it can feel like you’re crammed into a sardine tin. However, with the atmosphere at full pelt, the space issues translate into an intimate vibe where you feel like you’re in the midst of a cool private party.
The Music
Outside of exhibitions or wacky events going on deep underground, Public Life can mostly be found hosting after parties. Expect to be graced with minimal electro, tech and various other house-spawned genres.
The Drink
A far cry from West End prices, these are pub standard at around £3 for a beer. Unless a specific event is going on under the pavements of Shoreditch you will find a simple and limited selection, beers and mixers being the order of the day.
The Last Word
No other venue like it, Public Life is indeed an entity of its own - underground but not underrated. A common shout for those seeking after hours antics and after party shenanigans, this is a venue that should be visited at least once.
