Punch and Judy would be a great pub if it wasn’t plonked in the heart of tourist central.

The Venue
On the face of it, Punch and Judy has a great location. Situated within Covent Garden’s piazza, it’s located across two floors within the market, complete with a gorgeous balcony that overlooks all the comings and goings of one of London’s most interesting tourist spots.

But that’s where it ends as it gets so busy here that you can barely notice what a beautiful pub it is. The heavy wooden bar is traditional and well designed and there are lots of wooden tables and chairs to cater for the crowds. And what would have been a sprawling, empty space is broken up by nooks and crannies and a labyrinth-like layout that encompasses exposed brick walls with holes cut into them so you can peer through. It’s really very well done.

The Atmosphere
And so it’s a shame that it’s all spoiled by the hordes of tourists. It is busy at Punch and Judy ALL the time. And forget making the most of that gorgeous balcony – even if you can cram yourself onto it, you’ll be so squashed that any enjoyment of this spot will quickly fade. The staff do their best to stay on top of it but if you’ve ever been to the piazza, you will know this is an impossible task.

The Food
Tourist grub of sausage and mash, fish and chips and pies. No wonder the rest of the world believes the British don’t do good food. The prices are competitive though with most dishes priced at under £10.

The Drink
Thank God then for the beer selection at Punch and Judy. On tap, drinks include Becks Vier, Fosters, Kronenbourg, Leffe Blonde, Staropramen, Stella, John Smiths Smooth, Guinness and Strongbow and they also offer a couple of regularly rotating guest ales. The only down side is with the hordes of people, barrels do run out, which can be a disappointment.

The Last Word
Punch and Judy is a good pub, but its punters spoil things. A shame. Visit it off-season when things are a little bit calmer.
