The ViewLondon Review
Queens Arms is a true representation of a traditional Irish pub - closer to reality than an O’Neill’s any day.
The Venue
Old fashioned and traditional, this conventional pub is more Irish than British and is popular with the older generation of locals, providing a welcome break from the modern trendy bars of The City.
The decor at the Queens Arms is dated and well worn - not that the regulars seem to mind. The bar is split into two rooms - a large family room and a smaller, less furnished room complete with dartboard seemingly for adults only and probably men at that. The outdoor seating area is unfortunate in that it lies on a main road, dressed with beautiful potted plants it still fails to look attractive but is more than adequate for a quick fag or two.
The Atmosphere
A friendly welcome is given to all from staff and customers alike; quietly ticking along, the Queens Arms is refreshingly unobtrusive allowing you to enjoy your drink and company without distraction. Confirming the by now obvious fact, the tape of Irish music playing continually in the background verifies that this is indeed a home away from home for the Irish.
The Food
Serving up good pub grub with all the favourites on offer like ham, egg and chips, bangers and mash, and good old burgers, the menu at Queens Arms is more traditional than experimental serving good food with proven popularity. The entire menu is very reasonably priced - probably the most competitive in the area - and the servings are pleasingly filling, especially the satisfying chunky chips.
The Drink
As with all traditional pubs, the drinks on offer at the Queens Arms is standard with all time favourites like Fosters, Strongbow and Heineken on tap. As a Young’s pub there is, of course, the obligatory Youngs bitter and Special on tap, too. The spirits are your regular pub fare with an emphasis on whiskey but the wine is probably not going to be the most cultured glass you’ve sipped - sticking to the spirits and beers is probably the safest bet.
The Last Word
It’s not modern and it’s not fresh but if it’s a taste of the Irish you’re after you’ll find it at the Queens Arms.
