The ViewLondon Review
Located within a railway arch, Railway Tavern does little to inspire. A rough-around-the-edges decor is saved only by live music events and a weekly quiz night.
The Venue
The black and white Tudor facade of the Railway Tavern could match any jaunty old pub and the chalkboards that lean against the walls are pleasant on the eye whilst being informative.
If only they kept the doors shut because both entrances show off threadbare floral carpets and makeshift furniture. Fruit machines and arcade machines gun for number one entertainment in a corner and a television reigns over it all from a platform to the left of the bar.
The Atmosphere
The Railway Tavern is home to a daytime crowd that keep it looking busy with half empty pints of Guinness accompanied on tables by The Sun. The road is home to three or four now derelict old locals so the Railway Tavern has won the battle for this stretch of Globe Road’s local business and from 5pm it begins to bustle. Tuesday’s quiz brings people in, as does live music on a Sunday.
The Drink
You wouldn’t imagine that there is much interest in a wine list in this type of pub and the bottles are as mainstream as the spirits and liquors. The beer at the Railway Tavern is tolerable - the draught range includes Stella, Carlsberg and Fosters.
The Last Word
The Railway Tavern makes some effort with its choice of entertainment but probably isn’t worth the effort of a visit unless you happen to be in the area.
