Just home from Red Lion and Sun, had so looked forward to a delicious Sunday roast and so disappointed-Booked for 6.30-confirmed-but shouted at on arrival as not expected until 7.45! Ended up doing that classic English thing of apologising for their mistake-
Despite other tables remaining free for entire visit shown to table next to the loo as if bestowed major favour!
Waitresses very nice and service ok but..............
Oysters rough, belly pork far too fatty, medium rare burger more like steak tartare-brownie served with banana ice cream instead of vanilla-peppermint tea never appeared............£80!
Restaurant area empty as leaving-no surprise there-
Great beers and wine and nice staff but guy in charge rude and unprofessional =not likely to return.
Went for dinner last night with five friends and will happily return, as will my friends who had never been there before. We arrived in dribs and drabs and there was no pressure on us to start ordering food. Service was attentive without being overbearing and unlike our staggered arrival, the food was served collectively despite the variety of orders. Food was excellent (exception of the meringue, if being overly critical could have done with a little more air in the egg whites). Best pub in Highgate for food especially if compared against the overrated Flask round the corner. Warm welcome from the staff and snowy one of the locals. With barmaids that are easy on the eye what more can you ask for! Thanks guys.
Went there today with my family and dog. A few minutes after we were seated my dog was given a bowl of water which was really nice. I ordered the portobello mushrooms and then the burger with hand cut chips, both which were delicious, an impressive wine list and dessert menu too. Waitress was very nice and not overly attentive which I like. We will be visiting this pub again :)
Ive eaten at the Red Lion and Sun a few times now since they've gotten a new Head Chef and each time Ive ended up having the full 3 courses and not ever been disappointed! Whether its lunch or dinner each dish is perfectly executed and the menu is a totally appetising read. Ive dined with various friends and family off all ages each time and they have also enthusiastically agreed! You always end up staying in the Red Lion and Sun much longer than you anticipate its a really chilled out relaxing place and the staff are cool (and pretty!) its just a comfy pub serving quality restaurant food with a wicked vibe I highly recommend a trip to Highgate for the visit!! Though book a table in advance the place is packed every night :)
Feel lucky to have this pub close to my home. The decor is great and the atmosphere in the week is chilled and laid back - perfect. They do good quality, yummy food at reasonable prices and the staff are very friendly.
Drinks aren't expensive either. At the weekend/end of the week they are open late which is great if your in a partying mood or you can still chill.
It's pretty big and has two beer gardens.
A really great place.
Love this place. It's the only really decent pub in Highgate... I say this for a few reasons.
1) They have great beer gardens - fab in summer.
2) They have open fires - fab in winter.
3) The have great food - all cooked fresh. None of that microwave stuff and all the meat is top notch from Highgate Butchers.
4) They have good prices - food and drink are cheap.
5) They have great taste - the decor is pretty cool. Traditional but modern. Nice and bright too.
6) They have stamina - the license is until about 2am - great!
Nice pub. Feels like a local, and thus compliments a pub like the Flask well.
The Red Lion is by far the best pub in terms of food, decor, atmoshere and freindliness I've been to in ages. The two gardens and late licence over the weekend are a godsend.
