The ViewLondon Review
Another example of a Young’s pub getting it oh so right. If it wasn’t for the in-your-face branding you’d almost think that Richard the First was a traditional independent boozer rather than just one more venue in a very – very – big pub group.
The Venue
Make no mistake, Richard the First is a very pretty pub. From the proud hanging sign outside depicting Richard I in all his glory (a surefire tourist hit) to the bold exterior, this is a pub that demands attention. Inside, the heavy wooden bar is a centrepiece, showing off its selection of draught pumps proudly. The carpet is a little ugly but the tables and chairs are clean and well kept and all of the artwork covering the walls is enough to distract your attention. The real winner here, however, is the large outdoor space with plenty of seating for those looking to indulge in a spot of alfresco drinking in the warmer months – isn’t that what Greenwich is made for, after all?
The Atmosphere
Ah Greenwich – from the museums to Greenwich Meantime - this is one area that doesn’t have to do much to attract hordes of tourists. And meanwhile, the pretty setting and markets pull in Londoners. So expect it to be busy here at weekends and evenings as people pour in, looking for beer and banter. Luckily, the staff are very adept at keeping on top of the busy periods and although a bit of elbow-bashing may be needed at times, on the whole you’ll be served quickly and maybe even with a smile. Really?
The Food
Richard the First goes all out with its food menu, although the prices are reasonable with main meals coming in at £8-£15. Although the same old, same old fish and chips make an appearance, they do throw in a few more unusual options, too. Orange feta and watercress salad, anyone? No? How about venison and red wine casserole? It’s enough to get the mouth watering…
The Drink
With all bottles of wine priced at below £20 a pop, the value for money here is good, although there are only a half dozen red and as many whites and they’re not the most inspiring collection in the world. Far better – and more popular – is the draught selection. As well as draught lagers like Amstel and Heineken, they do a good line of real ales, including Young’s Bitter, Young’s Special, Bombardier and a regularly rotating guest ale.
The Last Word
Richard the First has a really warm, pleasant feeling to it from the moment you walk in – and it’s a feeling that stays with you throughout your stay. This is a fine example of a quality Young’s pub.
