The ViewLondon Review
A pub, restaurant and hotel all under one roof, the Rose and Crown manages to walk the fine line between being a Jack of all trades and offering a well rounded night out to punters. The VenueThe Rose and Crown is a pub, hotel and restaurant all rolled into one. Traditionally decorated with several feature fireplaces, attractive wall art and beautiful mirrors, it is in no way gloomy, and with a lovely courtyard area for al fresco drinking and dining it is an ideal spot for balmy summer days. The restaurant is situated in the conservatory, which is light, bright and airy and overlooks the pretty outdoor area.
The main pub area is more traditional, with several places set away from the main bar section, perfect for private conversations. Live sporting events are played on the flat screen TV easily viewed from the bar. Being Wimbledon, expect extensive tennis coverage each year.
The AtmosphereThere is quite a divide of clientele and the Rose and Crown, depending on the hour. During the day, locals pop in for a pint and a chat with the friendly bar staff. After dark, there is a younger contingent that rub shoulders with the slightly more mature regulars who live and work locally.
The FoodThe food here is regular pub grub typical of Youngs pubs, with specials regularly changed. Starters are from £4.25 for a soup of the day; mains average at £8.50 whilst sandwiches are priced from £5.50. Speciality teas and coffees are also available. If you’re just after a quick bite, however, you’re adequately catered for with a nice selection of sandwiches at around £5 each – Somerset brie with fruit chutney, anyone?
The DrinkAs part of the Youngs chain, there is a decent range of beer and lager available at the Rose and Crown, both on tap and bottles, including an above average ale selection. The average price of a pint is around £3. There is a good selection of wines, starting at £3.45 for a glass and £15 for a bottle of house white or Rose, or £17.45 for a bottle of red. A red Mo reson Pinotage 2006 is £24.50, Terra Sana Rose 2007 is £16.75 or Albarinos 2007 Rias Baixas (sp) (white) is £22.45. If you prefer a bit of sparkle, a bottle of Prosecco will set you back £21.25 or Taittinger Rose Brut is £50.50 if you fancy the real thing.
The Last WordFor a decent pint in a pleasant traditional English pub, Rose and Crown is as good a choice as any; with the attraction of sophisticated Wimbledon Village and picturesque common both in close proximity the location is perfect.
