The ViewLondon Review
Rose and Crown is a simple, straightforward pub in the usually more pretentious Sloane Square. The VenueThe Rose and Crown is a welcome contrast to the other pubs of Chelsea. This large brick-built pub boasts a decent-sized outdoor seating area for clement weather and sits on a corner plot down lower Sloane Street. Lashings of red paint and white walls mark the place out. Simple, threadbare and messy, you get the feeling that the Rose and Crown is pitched less directly at square-jawed jet set than the rest of the area.
The AtmosphereDespite its unloved appearance, the Rose and Crown is friendlier than many of the local venues and carries none of the inherent pretentions. The clientele vary from local families (including quite a few police), businessmen, and the odd tourist looking to hunt down a cheap lunch away from the hustle of Brasserie-rich Sloane Square, or shoot a couple of frames on one of the few pool tables to be found nearby.
The FoodTo match the somewhat common appearance of the Rose and Crown, the menu offers good hearty fare. It’s well made, served quickly, and is very tasty. It’s also incredibly good value for an area well-known for extortionate dining.
The DrinkBehind the messy bar sits an array of draught beers, including some decent cask ales and a number of European lagers. Only a small selection of wines are available and the cocktail list is fairly non-existent, but the glasses are clean, the beer is well-kept and the pool table works.
The Last WordDespite its lack of flourishes, the Rose and Crown has charm in abundance. It is a simple pub serving straightforward drinks, and in this area it’s a definite rarity.
