A local’s favourite with a lot to offer.

The Venue
Located in an area of Blackheath known as the Standard (so-named after this very establishment), this large local pub is a difficult one to miss and one you’re likely to travel past several times before deciding to give it a go. The initial appearance of the Royal Standard doesn’t really do the place justice.

Beyond the roadside picnic tables you wander into a traditional, comfortable looking pub with a large bar and huge seating area filled with mismatched furniture and plants. The room winds round into several sections that provide secluded areas to sit in – ideal for a quieter drink if there is sport showing on one of the many screens – and leads out onto a decent sized patio area where you can catch the afternoon sun.

The Atmosphere
The great thing about the Royal Standard is it appeals to so many types of punter – sport fans, couples, groups of friends, and those after a solitary pint will all feel comfortable here, mostly due to the space. Primarily a local pub, there is a familiar vibe from the regulars propping up the bar to the laid back staff who never keep you waiting long to be served. With the busy atmosphere of the pubs and bars in nearby Blackheath Village, the generally quiet surroundings at the Standard provide a great place to have a few drinks where a seat isn’t hard to come by.

The Drink
A good choice of lager is available both on tap and bottled and, best of all, there’s a nice real ale choice for connoisseurs – the Pride, in particular, is well kept. For real value for money, however, visit make the most of the Happy Hours where you can get great deals such as any bottle of wine with a third off meaning a decent quality Merlot will set you back less than £7! If you can’t make it between those times you can still select a bottle from the impressive selection with prices starting well below the £10 mark.

The Last Word
In short, if you want to get comfortable and don’t want to break the bank, this is definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.
