The ViewLondon Review
Floridita dives into the world of daiquiris at Salon Rojo. The VenueSalon Rojo is tucked away within popular Soho nightspot Floridita, which is itself only accessed via a sweeping staircase downstairs from Meza, another Conran venue. Spanish for the Red Room, Salon Rojo is dedicated to the famous Cuban cocktail, the daiquiri.
The AtmosphereSalon Rojo aims for 1950s' Cuban chic, which is exactly what it delivers. Expect loads of leather furniture, circular sofas and low tables, all in red hues. There’s only room for about 20 people, so it’s better suited for private parties or a night out with a large group of friends – if you show up early enough. There’s also a screen bedecked with a silhouette of Ernest Hemingway which can be drawn across for privacy from the rest of Floridita.
The FoodYou won’t really come to Salon Rojo for the food, since it’ll be the daiquiris you’re after. If you find yourself getting peckish though, there’s a varied mix of bar food with a Cuban twist, like marinated artichokes with cheese and fried bits of pork wrapped in bacon.
The DrinkThe daiquiris here are of the proper Cuban variety, which means no messing about with frozen mixes and hunks of chopped up fruit. The flavours run the gamut from sour to sweet, and if they’re are a bit too girly for your tastes there are some macho cocktails to choose from. These are slightly less fruity and much stronger, and they arrive in a large glass bowl that you literally have to pick up with both hands. Prices are decent for London, but the macho drinks cost nearly twice as much as the regular daiquiris, money well spent though as it'll only take a couple of these cocktails to leave even the tallest and strongest barflies with smiles on their faces.
The Last WordGreat for a night out with your friends, head to Floridita for some 50s-style Cuban glamour and in-the-know drinking at Salon Rojo's exclusive daiquiri bar.
