The ViewLondon Review
The Salt House offers Epsom’s revellers a chance to unwind in a cool, calm and relaxed environment. The VenueThe Salt House occupies the shell of an old bank in the middle of Epsom high street. The pub is actually quite unimposing from the outside, despite the grandiose style of the facade. Inside, there is space for seated drinking at the front, a bar area in the middle and a small dancefloor and further seating at the back of the rectangular shaped interior space. Chairs have been upholstered in black leather and tables are made from dark wood. Walls are black, and consequently the place always makes you feels like it’s nighttime, even if it’s bright sunlight outside. Right at the back of the bar there is a small garden area with a couple of picnic tables and an area for smoking.
The AtmosphereAt weekends, the Salt House is packed with 18-21 year olds, intent on getting pissed. Drinks here aren’t cheap, but entry is usually free, service is quick and it’s a far more sophisticated late night venue than other local hotspots.
Bar staff are friendly but rather rushed. Drinks are served better mid-week when there is time for servers to give you more attention. Mid-week nighttime drinking here is a far more relaxed affair than weekends. Apart from Thursday, the bar doesn’t tend to get busy and is a good place for a quiet nightcap Monday-Wednesday.
The MusicThe Salt House doesn’t play the best, but certainly not the worst, music in town. House, funk and RnB is popular, with cheese making an appearance only sparingly. DJs are usually locals and consequently rarely awe-inspiring. By 11pm the dancefloor is heaving on Friday and Saturday nights, although it doesn’t take many people to cover the compact 12ftx12ft space.
The DrinkHeineken, Guinness and Grolsch are all served here on tap at a just above average London fee. Spirits with mixer are a little more expensive and the wine on offer is overpriced, considering the less than average quality. A small range of cocktails are also available (although service can be rushed at weekends). As per usual, bottles of Corona, Budweiser and alcopops make an appearance, although exactly what’s on offer changes from time to time.
The Last WordA long time ago, Epsom became famous for its salt. Although it’s unlikely that the Salt House will rekindle the same level of celebrity status for the town, the bar does host a better than average weekend night out, and a pleasant space for a weeknight tipple.
