The ViewLondon Review
The fact that a pub has stood here for over 250 years means Salutation has pretty deep roots on this stretch of Hammersmith King Street.
The Venue
There has been a Coaching Inn here since 1750, so this is the real deal. There is nothing sexy about Salutation (except for their spacious terrace) but it hasn't had some designer airbrush away all of its personality either, like so many other old beauties. Many of the original features still exist in this handsome, but slightly shabby room, and a motley collection of seating is gathered around a carved wooden bar. The outside terrace is quite a lovely space with both opportunities for sun and shade.
The Atmosphere
There is a really interesting mix of people - from young rockers with skateboards to salesmen to couples. There is no evident thread linking them except that they appreciate the authenticity of the Salutation. It's rare these days to find a proper old school, unadulterated, boozer. They should be saluted for resisting the urge to go gastro.
The Food
There's a bit of an Italian theme here with pizzas cooked in a wood-fired oven (under 7 quid) and a selection of pasta dishes (under 6 quid each). If that doesn't float your boat, there is a steak and ale pie.
The Drink
A Fuller's pub, they serve a good range of draught choices: Discovery blonde beer, London Pride and ESB. The wine selections are somewhat limited but there is a good selection of bottled drinks. Overall, it's average pub prices.
The Last Word
Worth a visit on any ‘old-drinking-dens-of-Hammersmith’ pub crawl. On your way out, don't miss the photo, which hangs in the entrance, of the Queen Mum expertly pulling a pint. They don’t make Royals - or pubs - like they used to.
