The ViewLondon Review
Afro chic meets Eastern promise at Satay Bar, a Brixton haunt where the food is as authentic as a pan-Asian in the Orient and the music has enough soul to fire a thousand hearts. The VenueSituated on one of Brixton’s most notorious streets, Coldhabour Lane, Satay Bar is aesthetically more upmarket than it’s neighbours but still very much apart of the community.
The AtmosphereAnyone from couples to big groups and wannabe b-boys gather in the small yet intmately laid back bar. Whilst diners tuck into a spicy meal washed down with wine, buzzing groups and single types mingle in front of a seriously good cocktail.
The DrinkThe two worlds of Island life and Orient Express are reflected in the extensive cocktail menu at Satay Bar that, along with staple classics, includes the slow burn Reggae Rum Punch and the deadly Singapore Gin Sling. And if you arrive before 7pm you’re likely to sample both at half the price during happy hour.
The FoodSatay is Malaysian for street food and it couldn’t be more apt for a bar that sits so perfectly in the heart of a bustling groove. The blend of Malaysian, Indonesian, Singaporean and Thai cuisine means there’s ample choice and the menu is reasonably priced at roughly £5 for a starter and £10 for a main.
The MusicThe music is notably the selling point of the Satay Bar with DJs on rotation mixing a selection of Afrobeat, acoustic soul, nu-jazz and Brazillian funk. Thursday nights are brought to life with a live soul band leaving the weekends free for enough ‘get down’ time.
The Last WordIf India Arie opened a bar in Ko Pang Yang and invited all her soul-funk mates to play, then this would be it. Satay Bar is a hidden gem, that’s reclaiming the soul.
