On a recent visit I noticed the bar staff start my pint by pouring in the slop tray. It makes me wonder about the food hygiene now. I've been going for years but I won't be back.
Shepherd's was the preferred rendevous of fighter pilots during the 2nd World War when on leave in London. In those days there was a friendly smoky fug that hung around the place and despite the bombs falling all around the ardent beer drinkers continued to add to the raucous throng ignoring the risk when there was best bitter to be had! Such worthies as Bob Stanford Tuck, Max Aitken, Peter Townsend, amongst many others of 'the Few' when the RAF faced it's greatest challenge, could be found downing a pint or two !
Today it still manages to serve a good pint and reasonably priced food for the area and the atmosphere is good, although the fug has long gone as have those gallant pilots.
Nice pub, but dirty and sticky. I know the manager, but I have never seen her downstairs even when was busy. She is completely not able to manage the pub and the girls. I'm not surprised if girls are rude, they are like prisoners, have to do everything by themselves. That place could be nice but needs new management!!!
Great little pub, but worst service ever! There were around 7 of us looking for some food and a drink, we found this nice looking pub, went in asked if they were serving food, told yes, so ordered drinks sat down to look at the menu, one friend ordered straight away, a few minutes later went to the bar to order and was told that they stopped serving food at 4pm! It was 2 minutes past!
I explained that we had just purchased drinks, and asked if food was being served, had we know it was not we would have gone elsewhere, the blonde women behind the bar got quite irate and just kept repeating we don’t serve food aftre 4pm, she was not interested in the fact we had been told by another bar woman that food was on. When I asked to see the manager the blonde woman behind the bar said it was her! We ended up having a heated debate about the fact that we were told that food was on and her saying I don’t care its not served after 4pm! We did notice a sign and the menus saying food server all day! Stay away
excellent pub with a great atmosphere and nice good.
Look what has happened since 2005 (the last reviews)
Just got back from London yesterday and I couldn't wait to write this review. This pub was just a few blocks away from the hotel so I tried it.
This pub's staff were horrible. The blonde girl behind the counter had a less than friendly attitude and the guy actually tried to talk us into leaving! Walked out within minutes of entering, not even willling to try a pint after that those attitudes.
STAY AWAY!
Yikes, the Fosters has gone up!
Shepherds Tavern is an excellent pub, the barmaids are all worth one and I always enjoy myself there.
Shepherds Tavern is easily the most relaxed pub in Shepherd's market, it can get a bit full on football night but the mood is generally very good. The food's not amazing but they do sell Nobby's nuts.
The Shepherd's Tavern is a great pub. It's small, friendly and reasonably priced (Fosters = £2.09).
It has recently been refurbished to remove the old red carpet and weathered seating so that it is now a clean and smart place to drink. It still manages to retain a traditional English feel to it. If you don't like football, don't come on a big match night but don't let that put you off the place.
The bar snacks are slightly expensive but very pleasant and I haven't yet tried the restaurant menu but I've heard that it's decent.
It is undoubtedly the best pub in Shepherd's Market, but then only, O'Neills, Ye Grapes and The King's Head are here to rival it.
