The ViewLondon Review
Once the working day is done, a lot of the pubs on Bishopsgate tend to rammed full of shouty blokes and a transient crowd of people passing through Liverpool Street station. Your best bet at this time is to find one of the many boozers that are tucked off the main stretch. The Shooting Star fits the brief, it’s still lively but it’s less lairy than some of its neighbours.
The Venue
A Fuller’s pub in the City, the Shooting Star is just off Bishopsgate, on Middlesex Street, and it has the trademark black and gold signage and flowers decorating the front that you will find at Fuller’s pubs all over the capital. Inside, it’s a huge space with a massive bar and wooden tables and chairs everywhere you look and illustrations of ye olde London on the walls.
The Atmosphere
Naturally, the percentage of blokes in suits is high but, unlike some of the other boozers nearby, there seems to be less testosterone in the air. It’s not just fellas – plenty of girlfriends are in to share the latest office goss and a few glasses of vino. Service is commendable.
The Food
Now branded as an Ale & Pie House, you're in the right place if you like a meaty pie and a decent steak and ale version is, in fact, one of their signature dishes. Fish and chips and standard pub grub is also on offer. Prices are fairly reasonable, with few main dishes troubling the £10 mark.
The Drink
A great selection of Fuller’s ales are available, including London Pride, Discovery, ESB and seasonal brews like the hearty Red Fox. Pints cost in the region of £3.50 each. Plenty of lagers, wines and spirits pad out the drinks menu.
The Last Word
Preferable to many of the pubs on Bishopsgate yet only moments away from the beaten path, the Shooting Star is a solid and reliable choice in this part of the City, particularly if you’re into your ales.
