A rather dull pub that wakes up a bit at the weekend courtesy of its live Irish music sessions.

The Venue
From the outset, Sir Colin Campbell has little to recommend it. The simple green exterior doesn’t really stand out on the high street, sat as it is alongside cheap pizza places. The decor is on the basic side, comprising of little more than a few tables, a decent sized bar, a dartboard, a few big screens towards the back and a few posters on the walls advertising their Irish music nights. It’s also a little on the dark side, which only serves to heighten the gloominess.

The Atmosphere
Attracting mainly an older clientele, although the football attracts a different crowd, the punters at Sir Colin Campbell are mainly locals. The Irish traditional music at the weekend seems to pull in a lot of regulars as well. Although it won’t be many people’s idea of a wild night out, the attendees seem to get into it and it’s to the pub’s credit that they’re trying to offer more than just a dartboard. It’s also worth mentioning that the staff are particularly friendly and welcoming and do make an effort to lift the somewhat bland atmosphere.

The Drink
Surprisingly for a proper boozer like the Sir Colin Campbell, their bar is rather lacking on the beer front with John Smith’s flying the banner for ale all by itself. Guinness is obviously popular on the Irish themed nights but otherwise the lager selection is basic at best. However, they crawl it back with decent pricing, being cheaper than many pubs in the area. You may even end up with change from a tenner on a small round. Bargain.

The Last Word
Sir Colin Campbell is a pub starved of life despite its attempts at entertaining the masses. With a bit of effort it could become a decent local and you have to give it credit for surviving the recession when so many boozers have fallen by the wayside.
