The ViewLondon Review
Slice Bar is an inoffensive, utilitarian budget hotel bar with a surprising wine list.
The Venue
There is nothing to hate, but nothing to get excited about at Slice Bar. All the furniture appears to have been selected for its ability to be easily wiped clean. Nothing wrong with that per se - better that than sitting in something unsavoury, but it all seems slightly soulless.
The Atmosphere
As with all the bars and restaurants of the area, Slice Bar tends to pull in a well to do clientele with a definite skew towards businessmen and women. That said, the budget nature of the hotel its located within does lend more of a laid back edge to the atmosphere. When events are on at the Excel you can expect conference goers to fill the hotel – and consequently the bar.
The Food
There is plenty of choice on the well-priced menu with everything to fill you up whether you are looking for a nibble or a nosh. The chef's guest pie with veg, mash and gravy will top up your tanks and leave you change from a tenner.
The Drink
Draught beer is unadventurous with Boddingtons, Stella, Carling and Guinness. The wines are a surprise and frankly seem too good for such a place. Someone with a good nose for wine has assembled this list with reds broken up into easy drinking, more adventurous, and bigger and bolder; and whites subdivided into light and easy, rich and flavoursome, and traditional. Chateauneuf du Pape and Sancerre are some of the surprises found on the list.
The Last Word
It might be worth overlooking the vinyl seating for a glass (or bottle) of wine from the superlative list at Slice Bar.
