on Friday 11th November 2011, i set for a night out with the girls....we were meant to go to an event held at a club called colosseum in Vauxhall but circumstances caused it to be cancelled. As we were already ready to go out we were in hunt for a venue to go to, a friend recommended we try SouthBeach as it apparently had a nice vibe. We got there, the security were friendly and welcoming we were charged £20 to get in, We were told by an employee that "drinks were £1 all night" we were pleased with this so approched the bar, as there were 5 of us i ordered 10 shots of Tequlia so we could have two shots each, the girl was friendly and suggested that we have 2 shots of tequlia in 5 cups which i was happy with . The lady poured a hand mesure of the tequila in each cup and as she was doing so a gentleman (i presume the owner) walked past and told her someting in her ear....she then began to pour them down the sink until there was only a tiny bit in the cup....i then approched the bar tender and asked her why she had done this and she replied to tell me that we can only have half a shot for £1. Understandably i said ok well how much do you mesure your shots at in here the she replied 30ml i then went on to explain that if this was the case it would the be 15ml for half a shot and as we are having doubles we would need 30ml in each cup. She then shook her head and said the manager is not allowing her to do this we could only have what was in the cup which to me looked like even less then 15ml...having worked in a bar for some years i have experience within this trade. i then requested to speak to the manager which was the same person that had spoken to her previously. once i had his attention i simply requested that the bar tender used the appropriate equpitment in order to measure out our shots...The response i got from the manager was if you don't like it leave...after questioning why he had responded in such an abrupt way then then said again if you don;t like it leave
South Beach (Brixton) is opposite the 'White Horse' pub.I'd been past South Beach many times, but never ventured in. I frequent The White Horse. ...anyway - White Horse was rammed, so I paid the £10 and gave SB a shot!
(open til 3:30am)
After the search and paying in (which was speedy), I walked in and noticed it's a kind of narrow venue. It's hot in there, too.It had a small bar by the door (no draught).
£3.50 for a bottle of strong guinness. (no draught means no spills/knocking pints whilst walking). The decor is minimalistic/modern. It looks good.
There were fresh flowers on the bar, a big plasma screen showing videos...and a big Al Pacino painting feature/effect!
The crowd is mostly black and friends of black people. It's Jamaican/African mix. The age range looked to be from 21 to 40ish.
There were probably 60% women there - mainly in 3's and 4's. The guys were mainly solo or partnered.
Dress code: smart casual (no trainers/hoods). The style was guys: smart jeans/trousers...smart shirt/tops and sparkly blingy accessories! Smart shoes.
Well groomed people.Ladies: dresses, heels, smart jeans and blouses. Dress-to-impress.I was really amazed at the beauty of the women in there. They were FIT!Great personal hygiene/freshness.
Music: a mixed bag from soca to funky house to garage classics to ragga to soul to r'n'b to hip hop...the DJ was great! Mixing on CD decks.
Perfect beat-splicing, scratching, juggling. EXCELLENT selection. Quality sound system with solid bass. The MC added fun(k).
The vibe: Party/raving vibe at the DJ/dance floor area. Very friendly/bubbly/lively. No 'stush' attitude.
The girls are very friendly/chatty and will 'wind' with you!! No sleazy characters in there. Bar area is sombre and clear. There are seats/tables along the side and a VIP raised section at the back.
There was no trouble at all.Cons: loo is just one tiny bog! I got locked in!Verdict: great bar/club. Highly recommend.
