The ViewLondon Review
Tucked away in a pretty mews in Belgravia, The Star Tavern serves as a quaint pub for after work drinks.
The Venue
Hidden between the many embassies in the area and a little tricky to find, The Star Tavern is obviously well known to the regulars, as on a warm evening you will see them spilling out onto the street. On entering, you immediately find yourself at the bar and will be greeted by friendly staff ready to take your order. The walls are adorned with picture frames and an open fireplace inspires thoughts of a cosy winter’s night.
The Atmosphere
Pulling in the after work crowd, The Star Tavern is busy but not cramped. It’s full of colleagues unwinding after a hard day’s work and the air is full of chatter. The absence of music makes this a perfect place to have a relaxed conversation with colleagues or friends over a drink or two. The bar staff are welcoming and the overall atmosphere is laid back and easy going.
The Food
Food can be served in the upstairs dining room, or if you’re after something simpler, at one of the tables in the downstairs pub area. Like the wine list, the food menu seems to take on an international feel, with starters ranging from falafel to an Italian-inspired mozzarella and tomato salad. As a main, choices range from Vietnamese duck and noodles, to a good old steak and Guinness pie. Portion sizes are good and at an average of £5 for a starter and £10 for a main course, prices are very reasonable for the area.
The Drink
The Star Tavern has an international wine list, with whites ranging from a Chilean Sauvignon Blanc (£16.50 a bottle) to Sancerre (£28.20 a bottle) and reds from a South African Merlot (£16.50 a bottle) to Chianti (£34.90 a bottle), or if you’re feeling a little more lavish, try the Meursault (£61.50). The beer selection is reflective of the fact that this is a Fuller’s pub, with favourites such as Chiswick, Pride and Discovery on offer, although if these aren’t your thing then the usual suspects like Kronenbourg or Beck's can be had here too.
The Last Word
The Star Tavern sits in an affluent and attractive part of London and is a perfect stop-off on a scenic wander through its back streets.
