The ViewLondon Review
Hammersmith isn’t short of good pubs – Dartmouth Castle and the refashioned Thatched House are just two decent examples near this address. The Stonemasons is a beauty though: gaping windows let in loads of natural light, exposed brickwork inside exudes a reassuring air and a semi-open plan elevated kitchen is an unusual feature that gives oodles of character to the space.
The Venue
A Fuller’s pub, albeit one with aspirations above and beyond the norm, the Stonemasons is a few minutes’ walk away from cluttered King Street, but it’s a journey well worth making. The signature black and gold font signage, well-maintained exterior and decked area out-front create a pleasant first impression and this continues inside where a handsome space stretches out in an L-shape, with loads of room for groups of all sizes and a distinctly homely feel.
The Atmosphere
It always seems to have lots of natural light flooding through the windows during the day and it remains pretty chilled at all times of the day and night, to be fair. The staff are excellent, offering table service for drinks or food just at the right time (when you’re glass is dwindling).
The Food
Steaks, fish and chips and cracking lamb and spinach sausages and mash are the sort of mains on offer. The sausies come from the award-winning O’Hagan’s butchers and they're coarse in consistency and extremely good quality. They arrive on a bed of buttery mash with the added bonus of green beans and carrots. Props for this: they aren’t mentioned in the menu description and a lot of pubs would bump up the price by serving them as a side.
The Drink
London Pride (£3.45 a pint) from the Griffin Brewery down the road is good for those looking to reduce their drink-related carbon footprint, although more exotic choices include Blue Moon, an American craft beer. Wine is served by the glass, carafe and bottle, an idea that’s thankfully catching on across the capital. A carafe is just about right for two people, especially if you’re not in the mood to drink a lot and the La Palma Malbec is a smooth, brambly choice for £12.75 (500 ml).
The Last Word
A supremely chilled pub with hospitable staff, good honest food and a nice selection of drinks, the Stonemasons Arms is one of the best pubs you’ll find in the area.
