The ViewLondon Review
You could spend the entire week at the Sun and Doves in Camberwell, without ever having to leave. The VenueThis South London venue, which prides itself on dishing up ‘food, drink and art’ is a gastropub with a difference. With regularly changing art exhibitions, Sun and Doves offers a splash of culture with your pint.
A zinc-topped bar sits at the centre of the light-filled venue, dividing the pub into two spaces. To the left, a raised stage faces an intimate splattering of pine booths and leather couches, surrounded by bookshelves housing a mismatched collection of yellowing titles. On the other side of the room, wooden tables and chairs are spaced across the polished concrete floor to create a restaurant vibe.
The AtmosphereA stone’s throw from Brixton, the atmosphere at Sun and Doves is typical of many drinking establishments in the area – relaxed and laid back. The crowd is mixed – the reasonable prices making it a favourite pit stop on the way home for students and suits alike. The atmosphere is so laid back that pets are welcome, too! There are wooden tables at the entrance that, when the sun is out, are the perfect place to people watch on a Sunday afternoon. The bar also opens up onto a large beer garden, which is laced with crawlers, vines and strings of dainty fairylights – this secret garden style area fills quickly in the warmer months.
There is a variety of entertainment on offer any day of the week from film screenings to pub quizzes, live music, art exhibitions, poetry readings, comedy shows, dramatic performances, weaving an eclectic backdrop for drinkers.
The FoodDrop in for a mid week meal or a Sunday Roast and you wont be disappointed. The menu is modern and fresh with plenty of choice for nibbles and hearty lunches through to complete meals.
The chorizo sauteed in red wine and served with crusty organic bread is rich and smoky, evoking all the flavours of Spain. For mains, the smoked haddock with bubble and squeak and poached egg arrives in an impressive stack on an oversized white plate, and tastes as good as it looks. Veggies are practically spoiled for choice and will have trouble choosing between the Portobello mushroom burger with cheddar cheese and spinach, the butternut squash stuffed with goats cheese and sundried tomatoes, and the split pea and lemongrass felafel pitta with mint yogurt. Mains are generous and great value for money. They range from £6 for a bowl of pasta to £12 for a rib eye steak.
If you make it to pudding, the selection is small but sure to please. Traditional sweet treats including apple crumble with custard, banoffee pie and ice cream, are guaranteed to touch the spot.
The DrinkNo matter what your poison, the drink menu will satiate the strongest of thirsts. Beer guzzlers can make the most of Adnams Bitter, Old Speckled Hen, Kronenbourg Blanc and San Miguel on tap, and cocktailites will find pleasure in the united nations mix of cocktails from caipirinhas to mules, and Champagne cocktails to cosmopolitans.
The wine list features wines from Old and New World producers with a bottle of house white starting at £12. For something sweet and strong to finish your evening there are dessert wines, digestifs, liqueurs and deliciously extravagant alcoholic coffees to warm you for the journey home.
The Last WordBring your mum, your boyfriend and your dog, too, the Sun and Doves is a great pub with a home-away-from-home atmosphere where you can enjoy well-priced pub grub, cheap drinks and be entertained by your favourite movie, stand-up comic or any manner of live art
