The ViewLondon Review
The Angel Inn is a funky and friendly addition to the somewhat old-fashioned selection of pubs in Highgate.
The Venue
Situated right in the middle of Highgate High Street, The Angel Inn is made up of one large, L-shaped room that curves around a long bar and an open kitchen. The low ceiling, wood panelling on the walls and subtle lighting give it a relaxed and cosy feel. Add to the mix several comfy leather sofas – plus roaring fires in the winter months – and you begin to understand why the clientele tend to look so chilled.
The Atmosphere
With its traditional-meets-modern decor and friendly vibe, The Angel Inn attracts a younger and trendier crowd than other pubs in the locality. In the evenings there’s a lively buzz to the place – especially on Fridays and Saturdays when it’s full to the rafters and you can imagine you’re somewhere a bit more hip than quaint old Highgate Village. On weekends during the day it offers a quieter ambience, making it an excellent spot for sinking into a sofa and perusing the papers. Even at the busiest times, the staff are friendly and service is prompt. For armchair intellectuals, mental stimulation is provided by a selection of board games behind the bar and a popular quiz night on Wednesdays.
The Food
This is a gastropub in the true, original sense of the word, offering a winning combination of relaxed pub atmosphere and imaginative, well-prepared food. You can choose between casual bar food to share, such as meze or prawns and aioli, or a full dinner menu that combines pub grub staples like steak and ale pie with more adventurous dishes. On Sundays there’s a choice of three roast lunches, including a veggie option. Prices are pretty reasonable for Highgate.
The Drink
The eclectic food menu at The Angel Inn is matched by a similarly imaginative choice of draught beers, with a wide choice of German and Belgian lagers and UK speciality ales. There’s also an extensive wine list, which goes well beyond the usual suspects of shiraz and chardonnay. Prices are reasonable, though some of the draught foreign lagers are on the expensive side.
The Last Word
Whether you’re after quality pub food, a bar with a good weekend buzz or somewhere to chill out on a Sunday, The Angel Inn is a top choice for the neighborhood.
