Some of the old comments seen a bit unfair. I have only just moved to the area and I have to say this is the best pub in highgate. The atmosphere is always great, service really friendly and the food is fresh and tasty. If anyone has had a bad time in the past I think those days are gone. Give this great little pub a visit.
Terrible! Avoid!
All of this apply: Undercooked, Not fresh, Too bland, Poor value, wasn't as described, didn't taste as expected.
I had the roasted chicken on a sunday, which was awful. First there was nothing looking roasted, it was merely cooked propely, almost raw, and a terrible taste, I could feel the bad quality of the product, then I looked for the thyme (as advertised) which I couldn't find. The potatoes were undercooked, (I couldn't pitch my fork in them) , and some of them felt two days old, reheated. The celeriac undercooked and hard as rock as well. All the vegetables and sauce tasted very bad. I felt sick an hour after, despite leaving most of it untouched. My girlfriend took the halloumi starter and wasn't satified either, bad taste, undercooked etc...she left most of it. Then we asked for bread...bad idea...what we had was a piece of dry thing, obviously old and directly out of the freezer. Looking closer at it, we found...mould! It was rotten. When we flagged this, the reaction was pretty mild and nobody ever came back to apologise and bring us an other piece of real bread. Then we left. It costed us 25£. The service was terrible too, nobody checked if we were fine and I couldn't speak to a member of staff at the end as they were too busy and uninterested as I had to pay upfront.
Appaling experience...
I can agree with some of the recent comments, ive been in around five or six in the evening for food, first time the barman charged me a different price for a glass of wine than the next time (over charged) and when ordering food set up the card machine to ask if a wanted to leave a tip,(before i got the food? did he expect a tip for pouring a glass of £5 wine?) and gave me a smile with all the warmth of a Great White. The foods reasonable priced though it does come round suspiciously quickly sometimes.
Again with other reviews the main gripe is the staff attitude, if your over 30 they seem to look right through like your some pensioner walking into Ministry of Sound, they dont even ask if the food is ok when taking your plate away just some brief grunt?. In addition, it does have a rather scuzzy ambience, sticky wooden tables, gammy condiment holders and no sign of cleaning, it has a strange airless quality as well with the kitchen exposed to the room and has always struck me as having a strange Feng about it.
I presume I am one of those 'young-shot swilling' customers that frequent the Angel inn and at 30-something I am a bit concerned by the recent post. I have been loyally drinking in the Angel for a good number of years now and I have seen it change, change again and change once more. The Angel does things differently and it is greatly received by us locals. There is never any trouble and it doesn't have any chavs, underage drinkers or the like! Now this is probably the reason that The Angel Inn is packed on a Fri, Sat or Sunday! People obviously want to be there and that even includes the staff. I cant stand walking into a bar or pub only to find the staff bored/grumpy and I cant stand people who shoot a place down because of its popularity! Its common sense to anyone if you want to go out and have a quiet drink don't expect the best pub in the area to have 3 people all mulling over their pints on a Friday night! Its going to be busy! I have even brought my family to eat there on several occasions and as they are 60+ they certainly didn't feel alienated?!? I think the short-sightedness is coming from the 'clutch' of regulars who probably kicked off when the previous manger changed and the one before that. People, like me, will be enjoying our weekend there and will continue to do so and while you think we wont be drinking here in 5 or 10 years time, we will, and even though you deny it I bet you will too. I hope the guys at the Angel carry on doing what they are doing! If only it had a garden!
The Angel Inn would be better described as "club Angel" as it is now managed by a young crew who have done a great job of alienating the older clientele, including those of us who have been going there for years. The previous manager kept a good balance and there were a clutch of regulars aged 50+. The new regime has music blaring so loud that decent conversation is impossible, and there seem to be more shot-swilling youngsters who make it seem like a private party with their over-the-top noise. They probably spend quite a bit of money, so that seems to be the plan - encourage the younger element and let the old fogies go elsewhere, which is exactly what our group has done. The pub seems to cater for the bar staff, their friends and the kids of the area; last time the barmaid was having a lovely time dancing behind the bar to the music while we were almost shouting at each other to attempt conversation. Such a short-sighted approach - the younger element will tire of it and move on, while the regulars would have a greater loyalty. Maybe not such immediate and reckless spending power as the youngsters, but as the name implies, a regular source of income. Another one bites the dust!
Horrendous - was in here last week after a year away and was astonished at how far standards had fallen. The pub actually smelt as if something was decomposing in the kitchen (or possibly under the floorboards) and the barman was like a character from the league of gentlemen. The tables were sticky and unclean as were the doors into the loos, which for early on a quiet afternoon suggests they hadn't been cleaned at all that day. The whole experience was just creepy and I couldn't even finish my drink. For a pub in such a prime location I'm really surprised it can keep going at all with such a manky feel to it.
Friendly vibrant bar, but whatever you do, don't have the cocktails. There is a large gilt-framed sign saying "We Love Cocktails" with an appetising list of the cocktails they serve. I settled for the caipirinha but the drink I was served was a warm quarter pint of Cachuaca and sweet syrup with 2 ices cubes and 2 small slithers of lime. Whatever happened to the crushed ice and "lime, lime and more lime"??? Next time I'll stick to the beer
Went in on sunday and the service was appauling. Despite being quiet, had to wait ages to be served and then it was by unfriendly staff. Dissappointing and overpriced.
Good pub. Nicely upgraded from the days of my (misspent) youth. Excellent food, good range of beers.
When I first found The Angel Inn, I was amazed. The staff are really friendly - they make excellent cocktails and the food...the food is so good I go in there every Saturday now just for the brunch. In my opinion, the best pub in Highgate.
