The ViewLondon Review
When Brick Lane became the uber hip place to be there were bound to be those left untouched by the influx of interest. The Archers joined that select group.
The Venue
Located at the start of the Aldgate East end of Brick Lane, the Archers struggles to muster much enthusiasm with its tired looks, emphasised by the faded watercolours of its tatty old sign that hangs in ten-foot glory above the entrance.
Inside the pub is a kaleidoscope of the mundane with wicker and polished metal chairs vying with mucky woods for attention. The venue is small and dark enough for a more forgiving visitor to call it cosy and the array of 'money of the world' pinned to the wall behind the bar hints at the beginnings of decorative flourishes.
The Atmosphere
The Archers calls out to the clientele of the East End who don't mind the sparse decor when there's Sky Sports and a massive range of beer to be had. Evenings attract locals from the side streets and people walking up Brick Lane who just want to pop into the first pub they come across.
Without the live football on one big screen it would be hard to see the pub's attraction but with it installed the atmosphere does raise up a notch on match days.
The Drink
There is a middling range of beverages on offer at The Archers, although when it comes to lagers the pub excels with the choice. Stella, Kronenbourg, Carlsberg, Heineken, Fosters and are all available on draught.
The Last Word
With such a grand selection of lagers you can’t help but show The Archers some respect. The atmosphere really isn’t up to enough to make it a regular hang out but this does raise up a notch when the football’s on.
