The ViewLondon Review
Take a beautiful building from the 1800s, cover in a Shepherd Neame coating, stick in the oven for 20 minutes and ta da! The Ashburnham Arms.
The Venue
The Ashburnham Arms is off the beaten track as it's located on a quiet road that’s typical of Greenwich. The beautiful white and exposed brick building with bold red signage is slightly spoiled by the in-your-face Shepherd Neame branding. Luckily, the positives outweigh the negatives, such as the pub’s two bars (yup, count ‘em – two) and pretty conservatory space leading out to a pleasant patio area. The spacious venue is comfortable, clean and airy with a neutral colourscheme and plenty of wooden tables and chairs but all that anyone is looking at here are the numerous draught pumps...
The Atmosphere
Unlike many of the other numerous pubs in and around Greenwich, the somewhat remote location of the Ashburnham Arms means that this is a spot mainly given over to locals. This can be a good or bad thing depending on your point of view. It doesn’t suffer the hectic feeling of many of the more touristy pubs but there is a sense of being out of place if you’re a newcomer. Proper old school country pub, then.
The Drink
As well as a large selection of lager on draught, which includes some more unusual selections like Oranejboom and Holsten, the Ashburnham Arms also offers a good choice of ales, including Master Brew, Kent’s Best and Spitfire. And these seem to be the drinks of choice. Good thing, too, given the far more uninspiring choice of red and white wine. Merlot, malbec, shiraz...nothing particularly exciting.
The Last Word
If you want to escape the tourist trail and enjoy draught beer then this is a decent enough boozer to while away a Saturday afternoon in.
