The ViewLondon Review
Wherever it is, you can count on you local Wetherspoons for cheap drink, cheap food and younger than average patrons. Wherever did we drink before it?
The Venue
Epsom’s Wetherspoons occupies the Assembly Rooms building, taking pride of place at the edge of the town, just outside the Ashley Centre. It’s a pretty huge place with a long bar, plenty of space for crowds to gather and a wide room, partially separated into sections each filled with an assortment of tables and chairs. The upstairs floor is reportedly equally large, but almost entirely dedicated to the women’s toilet - a space that is apparently so big it must be seen to be believed. The men’s toilet is rather miniscule in comparison.
The Atmosphere
The Assembly Rooms is friendly, lively and full of people, especially from Wednesday-Saturday, when a great deal of local students congregate to consume cheap drinks before going out elsewhere. In the daytime, the pub is home to a different sort of drinker, a more sedate older crowd who inhabit the pub from midday onwards, specifically for cheap British grub.
The Food
Like all Wetherspoons, The Assembly Rooms offers ridiculously cheap food, served quickly. Although quality is low, chefs make up for this in quantity, serving huge portions of chips, peas and beans with pretty much everything. There are certain offers available on certain days when you can get deals like a curry and beer for less than £5 (which, by anyone’s standards, is a great deal).
The Drink
The drink is basic, but again very cheap. A four man round of double vodka Red Bulls here will set you back less than £10. A bottle of wine, though perhaps not entirely delicious, should cost about the same.
The Assembly Rooms introduce a range of guest ales every month, which range from the ridiculously bad to the extremely passable. All of them are cheap enough to keep you smiling, should you choose the good or the bad. Furthermore, the bar stocks a wide range of spirits, including hard to find varieties of whisky and rum like Wild Turkey and four roses, and even these are cheaper than basic spirits at your local.
The Last Word
This Wetherspoons is still undoubtedly the best place in Epsom for cheap drinks at the start of the evening. Always busy, always cheap, you know that no matter how much you drink, you’ll always have enough change left for a chicken shish at the end of the night.
