The ViewLondon Review
A short stroll from West Ealing overground station, this stylish, welcoming and intimate venue wouldn’t look out of place in the West End. Tucked behind a discreet fascia on an unassuming street, it sets out to fill a niche as Ealing’s premier cocktail bar – and doesn’t fall too short of the mark.
The Venue
The location of The Avenue is slightly off the beaten track, away from the main thoroughfare of Ealing Broadway. For many, this is a distinct advantage. There’s plenty of outdoor seating for balmy nights, with the doors left open to give a continental feel to sunny evenings.
Inside, the venue is spread across several floors, with big tables on the ground floor accommodating larger groups. Step downstairs into the basement and you’ll see the main bar to the left, while upstairs a semi-private room is perfect for parties. The decor is modern and funky throughout, with brown velvet seats, sandy walls, dark wooden floors and candles helping to create a cool yet cosy ambiance. A funky plasma screen behind the bar displays intriguing images to help get you in the party spirit.
The Atmosphere
The bar attracts a discerning crowd of over 25s looking for a touch more sophistication than is offered at the local down and dirty boozer. It’s rare to find a venue that successfully combines sophistication with a welcoming atmosphere but The Avenue comes pretty close to doing so.
Low-key by day and sometimes a tad quiet for some tastes, this place comes into its own at night. The ambiance is relaxed and welcoming during the week, with the tempo hotting up over the weekend as DJs play funky house, RnB and garage into the early hours. NHS workers and local council employees receive a discount on weekdays and salsa nights are held on Wednesdays. Live music is a key focus, with regular soul and jazz events. The venue also specialises in parties - whatever the occasion, it will organise your special event as you want it.
The Drink
Drinks are the real pull of this bar, with the emphasis firmly on cocktails. In fact, The Avenue has established itself as a destination venue on account of its reputation for producing excellent versions of the Jaguar, Ready Steady Go and Flirtini. All the concoctions are made using fresh produce, with an exceptional level of pride taken in the service. If your favourite cocktail is not on the menu, the bartenders will create it especially for you. Beer drinkers benefit from a cosmopolitan choice of bottled beverages from £3. Wine starts at around £11 a bottle.
The Last Word
For an unusually good cocktail or a fun night out at the weekend, The Avenue is a great stopping point. Drop in for a drink and you may find yourself staying longer than you intended.
