The ViewLondon Review
Chiswick High Road has an abundance of establishments to choose from. But if you want a no-frills pub that harks back to the good old days, then The Barley Mow is a good shout.
The Venue
You’ll find this large and friendly pub in between Chiswick Park and Turnham Green tube stations - but it’s closer to the former. Its patio-ed front is very welcoming and during the summer months, it is very popular as the BBQ gets fired up. Seating is sheltered from the unpredictable British weather and, when it gets a bit chilly, the garden heaters are on hand to warm you up.
Inside the pub, you get a vibe of local familiarity. All the fixtures are dark wood and it still has that old boozer charm. If you’re into your sport, then you are in luck as this is good place for the big match. It is mainly a rugby and cricket pub, but football is also shown regularly.
The main pub area is very spacious and can fit a lot of people. At the back, there is a quiet dining area with lots of framed pictures of Chiswick on the walls. Candles flicker here delicately and this is a great place to grab a bite to eat with a bit more privacy.
The Atmosphere
The Barley Mow’s busiest days are at the weekend. It is a very popular place for locals, so if you want the opportunity of nabbing a seat, get down there early. The patio at the entrance to the pub makes it more attractive. It looks out on to the high street and is a pleasant place to enjoy a few drinks. The bar staff are bubbly and really rather lovely, adding to its sociable vibe.
The Food
The menu is uncomplicated and filled with hearty British food. Choose from pub favourites like bangers and mash (£8.50), fish and chips (£8.95) and lasagne (£8.95). All meals are prepared fresh on site and come in healthy portions. You can also get dishes from their grill, like Cajun chicken supreme (£9.50), gammon steak (£9.50) and different sized rump steaks. The gammon steak is a thick cut, not too salty and beautifully juicy. The accompanying fat chips are superb, as the skins are left on making them a crispy delight.
The Drink
Being a predominantly sporty pub, the drinks selection isn’t too fancy. A good selection of beer and guest ales feature for around the £4 mark, but The Barley Mow has a secret weapon: its Jagermeister machine, which is heavily used by its patrons. If you do fancy some wine, then the house is quite respectful. At only £3.60 a small, £4.80 a large and £14 the bottle for very drinkable wine, it is good value.
The Last Word
A welcoming air and a fun-loving attitude make The Barley Mow a great place to party with friends, watch sport, enjoy live music, or to just have a quiet meal; it caters for all.
