About an hour and a half ago I would have recommended this pub. Lovely staff, friendly, accommodating when I asked if I could bring in chairs from the terrace as it was quite busy with the football. Our food was a little late but I guess understandably because of the footie. Eventually it arrived, my burger was nice and my bf sausage and mash was ok. My friend had ordered 5 mins after me, his food never arrived. Not only did it not arrive but he was subjected to the rude ramblings of what appeared to be the boss or manager who rather than apologise for the delay, was rude and violent towards my friend, closing the flap of the bar on his arm. I don't make a habit of making complaints but when you are as rude as that man, no matter how under pressure you think you might be it doesn't warrant you being downright rude and obnoxious to your customers. My friend got a refund but still, it's not the point. Would I recommend this place? The answer is a big fat NO.
This pub is very nice and very much in line with what the neighbourhood is becoming. The selection of beers is very good, the service outstanding, the atmosphere friendly and the prices average. There are board games and a nice garden at the back. I have not tried the food yet but they always have special offers that will make me try one day or the other. I am giving 5 starts because it is the perfect combination of what I am looking for in a pub. Give it a try! See for yourself
Upsides: This is quite a nice pub since it's refurbishment and new management. The new owners are very friendly, and the food is good, with a good selection of beer. And the decor is tasteful. Has a lovely little back garden area too.
Downsides: Unfortunately the TV is always on showing sports and it therefore attracts a certain crowd. I have left there before due to boxing being on and it just creates a rather grim atmosphere, I have seen women enter the pub, see boxing on and leave immediately. Also the new owners now allow people to bring their pit bull/staffie looking dogs into the bar so I won't go any more.
A good pub but fear it is going downhill.
"The Prince is dead, long live the Prince". The Black Prince is no longer the traditional Irish boozer frequented by locals, it is now another homogenized bar serving food and wine hoping to attract the upwardly residents that have moved into the area. On that score it will be a success, the bar, although not changed a great deal, is more inviting, the staff attentive and nice to see the owners working the bar rather than handing over to a manager.
Background music a nice touch and quite funky, think 1970's Philly and you get the idea. Shame that the music was playing during the football though, no point having 2 plasma screens if you can't hear the commentary. Prices slightly above other bars in the area and probably a nice place to meet and start the evening before moving on. Lived in Kennington for 37 years before heading North and the "prince" was my local, I doubt it would of remained my local if I still lived in London, place is lacking the characters that make a pub a pub. Good luck to the new owners though. John
The Black Prince is a blight on the neighbourhood. It has a menacing air about it and is unfriendly towards strangers - they actively discourage strangers because of the nature of the people that frequent this pub. I'm fed up with the drunks from this pub urinating against my property - they don't care if it's my dustbin, my front door or even my car. If you want to drink until you are incoherent, then this is the pub for you.
